    Want to try cichlids

just out of curiousity, why in a 75 gallon tank would you change 60-70 gallons a week? that seems insane for even the most gentle fish you'd be change 20 gallons every other day or changing 90% of the water once a week? either way it seems a little excessive or maybe I'm wrong

    Want to try cichlids

+1 with Geophagus. They are probably some of the most entertaining South American fish there are. Very active fish and great to watch. Ive seen Oscars and Jack Dempseys and such and in my opinion they are kinda dull compared to Geo's not to mention everybody has them. I don't like to have...

Male Bolivian and Female Blue Ram Cichlid mating pair?

They might run through the motions but still not gonna have little ones from those two

Male Bolivian and Female Blue Ram Cichlid mating pair?

Not gonna happen. They'll hang out but not having little ones

What was your first ever cichlid?!?

Yeah that would be cool. For all the Ram's and Apisto's I have and have had, that's one of the few I've never kept. Great little fish though.

    What kind of cichlids?

Am I just having very bad luck? (New to Cichlids)

For what kind of fish? Different places/people specialize in certain fish so it really depends on what you're looking for. I'm all about Apisto's and other South American's like Geo's and such.

Why are my cichlids rubbing on everything

If you had access to an established tank, you could get a little filter media or gravel or whatever from it to help seed your tank/filter. My brother and I do this all the time and have just about mastered it. Can cycle tanks within a week, but we always keep extra sponge filters established...

Why are my cichlids rubbing on everything

Depending on how many fish, you should be fine. If you had a test kit, it's easy to tell how far along you are in the cycle. You'll start by building up ammonia until the bacteria develop to convert the ammonia into nitrites and then again more bacteria to convert the nitrites into nitrates at...

Why are my cichlids rubbing on everything

Check for spots, check the gills, see if any scales anywhere are damaged, see if the poop looks normal, etc.... If the tank wasn't a new tank, then you'd probably have to be a little more worried but it sometimes happens with tanks that aren't 100% cycled and you add fish.

Why are my cichlids rubbing on everything

If fish are uncomortable in the tank that they are in due to the ammonia being a little to high, or the pH is off or has moved a little bit, or for a number of other reasons especially since it is a new tank. It could possibly be a parasite which is why you need to pay closer attention to them...

Am I just having very bad luck? (New to Cichlids)

Yunite has some great Ram's. Wetspot from time to time has some pretty good ones but always decent and there are a couple sources on Aquabid I would trust as well.

Am I just having very bad luck? (New to Cichlids)

If you order from a place and fish are dead when they show up and the company won't do anything to help you, you should never have done business with them in the first place. A reputable company or individual would almost alway rectify a situation like that. I'd much rather pay the $20 for...

Am I just having very bad luck? (New to Cichlids)

You're ordering from the wrong places. I've ordered 75% of the fish I have and have only lost a couple. My brother orders his fish as well with only a few that have perished. If you're ordering from a reputable source, they will have a good stock of fish, they will know how to properly bag...

Am I just having very bad luck? (New to Cichlids)

Unfortunately, most every if not all Rams you'll get from Petco/Petsmart, have horrible genetics leading to very short lifespans (1 year if you're lucky) and possibly other health problems. If you can't find them at a close lfs, then I'd suggest ordering them from a reputable source. I know...

    Apistogramma nijsseni

Dorsigera are cool but pictures do them no justice. They are beautiful in person with all the red on the underside. "Red Breasted Acaras" is what they're known as and very nice fish.

All my Ram's and Apisto's eat are Brine, Mysis, Daphnia, Cyclops, Spirulina and now live worms. They should love the shrimp.

Yeah then check out the Panduro.

Am I just having very bad luck? (New to Cichlids)

Rams can be tough on each other in tanks that are to small or not set up properly (too open, not enough hiding, lines of sight not broken up, etc...) especially once they pair up. You'd be fine if it was all males or all females as I have tanks of both with no issues (it's where I keep my...

    Apistogramma nijsseni

If you're looking for the Nijsenni, unless you're fairly well versed in Apisto's, you won't know the difference between the Panduro and Nijsenni. The females are easy to tell when they turn yellow but the males are very similar.

    Apistogramma nijsseni

Check out apistodave. Best dwarf cichlids youll find and thats where I got my curvisceps and my Panduro's. You will not find better apisto's

    Apistogramma nijsseni

Nijsenni can be a little tougher to come by but check out the Panduro as they are very similar.

Why are my cichlids rubbing on everything

Yup, once everything is cycled and more stable, everything should be fine. Just make sure you are checking on them regularly and if you do start to see spots or anything develop than go from there but as long as you're doing regular water changes and aren't overfeeding, nitrites or ammonia or...

    Any ideas??

Rams are a great little fish. Just have to make sure you get good stock (not getting them from Petco/Petsmart). There are also some little African Shell Dwellers.
