You may have gotten some sick fish from your LFS that were doomed from the get go. You may not have a problem with your tank at all.

You should not pick up sand as long as you hover your gravel cleaner just over the surface of your substrate. You can also get crushed aragonite that is very similar to gravel and will have the same effect on your pH. What size is your tank? Sent from my iPhone using Aquarium Advice

You may want to think about replacing the gravel you have in your tank and put in aragonite sand. The aragonite sand will raise your pH, and the fish love to dig in it. Sent from my iPhone using Aquarium Advice

I have a sand base with crushed coral mixed with regular brown rock. You are right, I wish I would have gone with straight sand. So much crap gets caught in that rock. Will know next time. Sent from my iPhone using Aquarium Advice

I recently moved my powerhead to the center of the tank, and the amount of current seems just right. The fish seem to enjoy the extra water movement, and it keeps all the poop and other debris off the bottom and able to go into the filters. Sent from my iPhone using Aquarium Advice
