I have several of those filters and like them, especially for the price. I have also used ATI hydro pro filters. I like them a little more, as they are less prone to clogging up, and don't rely on a suction cup to hold the unit in place.

I would also guess platy. IME, the platy fry have more color sooner than guppy fry, so if you are already seeing some orange, that would lead me to think platy.

I know that ammonia is commonly used as a refrigerant, and has been for quite some time. What make & model of the freezer or A/C unit? I'm not sure if the manufacturers will list what their refrigerant is or not, but it can't hurt to look.

You better put me on the list for some CPDs. I've been wanting some of those for a while now.
