    African Cichlid Newbie Need Help

I agree with squirrliah I am currently am working on an all male peacock and hap tank. I find it fun and rewarding but not easy. One thing I would say is definitely look into what is available locally. I find one of the hardest things is locating good fish in the local stores. It has taken me...

    Hormoned females show color?

Found this article online tend to believe it because my 2 are definitely female not stressed males and they were showing way to much color that faded quickly. They were in a tank by themselves for two weeks so it wasn't a case of them just being sub dominant or stressed...

    Omega one cichild pellets?

I use both nls and omega one super color. My local stores only sell the small pellet nls so I use omega one for my larger fish. I haven't had any problem with bloat and my fish seem to like both so I have no complaints.

    Hormoned females show color?

I have had plenty of peacocks and am aware of how they color up with age but these two fish were showing good color like males and both turned out to be females. The one who had the best color when I bought it the sunshine is currently holding so it's definitely not a stressed male. I kind of...

    Hormoned females show color?

I bought 2 fish I thought were males about three weeks ago. The first one is a sunshine peacock and the second one was a bi-colored peacock. I never realized that females could show so much color when hormones but I have definitely learns my lesson. The sunshine is just over 2" and was showing...

    Red shoulder or something else?

The funny thing is I was asking because I thought he looked a lot like mine. I bought it as an Eureka red but he is low in the pecking order so I was trying to confirm it was really an eureka. Yours looks like it has more red showing than mine but mine was showing more red when I got him so I'm...

Is this a colored down Eureka red?

Yeah that's what I'm thinking. I'm afraid to move the dominant fish because the #2 is kind of a jerk but the #1 keeps him in line. I figured he probably won't show more color until it grows out more.

    Ripped fins...

It will grow back in a week or two it's normal among cichlids as long as it doesn't get too bad he should be fine. There is almost always 1 or 2 of mine who have a little fin nip if it gets bad though get him out if possible to heal up. And I don't doubt it was the mbuna. I removed mine and put...

    Adding new cichlids

I have done both ways but it makes me nervous adding direct to my show tank. I would hate to get my current stock sick because it would cost a lot of money to replace. I have a 29g I use as a qt tank. I usually only leave them in there for a week or so even though I should wait longer. I...

    Feeding habits?

I feed my fry 3 times a day, my juvies twice a day, and my adults 1 time a day. I also skip a day once in a while to let them clear out. Haven't had any trouble with over feeding yet. I also make sure to only feed what they can eat in a few minutes.

Is this a colored down Eureka red?

I got this guy a month and a half ago and when I picked him up he was showing some decent red. Since he has been in my male show tank he has only been showing a dark blue/purple color so I'm wondering if he is a colored down eureka or if he could be something else. He is low in the pecking order...

    New red fin borleyi

So I had to explain to the guy at the fish store that he was a male red fin after he was trying to net a silver juvie but after a quick google search he believed me and I got him for $7. Worth the 40 min drive.

    If you want males...

I have been in the same boat that is why my stocking is going slowly. I have trouble finding males at lfs. I hit them often and buy them when I can. It's also the reason why I have ended up with smaller tanks holding juvies and females. I have done pretty well picking out males from unsexed...

    Nitrate levels & filtration.

I might give the Purigen a try I just hate messing with my water if I don't have too but I'll take a look next time I hit the lfs. I usually do all my wc's on Sundays as well I occasionally slip in an extra one during the week if I'm not too tired from work. If I could get it down to an hour for...

    Nitrate levels & filtration.

Less fish is definitely not an option I'm actually looking for more. I have 11 right now in my show tank since I switched to an all peacock and hap tank. My nitrates aren't out of control or anything after a large wc they drop to between 10-20ppm they only get as high as 40ppm right before a...

    Nitrate levels & filtration.

Thanks sonic. I'm pretty sure I knew that about the nitrates from when I was doing my research on setting up my tanks but it has been a while guess I forgot. After thinking about it I agree that it may be fish waste stuck in,under, and around decor. I try my best to get it all when vacuuming but...
