    My Blue Mandarin!!!

Try to get your hands on a few balls of cheato to put in the tank. The cheato will give the adult pods a place to avoid predation and breed. Cheato will not go sexual or attach to your rock work so no worries there as far as having it in your DT. Some things in your tank will snack on it but...

    My Blue Mandarin!!!

I have had a target Mandarin in a 29 gallon tank for three months that has shown quite a bit of growth. Grant it this tank served as a fuge for quite some time prior to the mandarins introduction, has 25 pounds of seasoned LR, macros, was packed with pods prior to the mandarins arrival and is...

    Taring down ASAP

Well I find it hard to believe that no matter what I buy there is always issues. Here is the short list. coralife aqua lites at 250 dollars. The LED moonlighting is unshielded. Despite mounting on legs and making quite certain no micro bubble spray was reaching the fixture all four LEDs...

    Taring down ASAP

Well this morning I awake to yet another equipment failure. Submersible Pump on skimmer simply will not work. I cleaned it down in the sink and got it to initiate a few times but as soon as I put it back int the sump and plug it in.....nothing Considerinbg it is somewhere around 5 months...

    Equipment issues

I would say at this point the two factors are greed and marketing. Taking less profit by makeing a functioning piece of equipment that last seems to be out of the question. Marketing. Keep the consumer in endless circles of purchase never able to arrive at his goal until he eventually gives...

    Equipment issues

Just checking to see if its just me. Since setting up my tank in July it seems that one equipment issue after another has plagued me. The latest is my skimmer which produced wonderfully for months has now tested my patients for the last two weeks. Over the last two weeks endless tweaking...

    Water pressure to RO/DI unit

Ok thanks. I live in a condo complex and noticed that after hours my PSI went up to more like 48. I am assuming here that as water use throughout the complex goes down my PSI rises a bit. Since the plan was to top off my storage running the system overnight I am beginning to feel a bit better...

    Water pressure to RO/DI unit

I purchased a Aqua FX 4 stage RO/DI unit today and so far so good. Its a 50 GPD unit with a built in two way TDS meter. TDS in is 5 or 6 and out reads 0. Its producing about a gallon every 20 minutes so out put seems as advertised. My only concern is I am only getting about 44 PSI off of a...

    Zoo hitchhiker/lighting

Sorry to dig this post up from the dead but.... Its become unmistakable that hitchhiker is in fact a zoo. It has doubled in size since last post and has an bright orange center reminiscent of zoos. Evidently 260 watts PC lighting is sufficient for zoos. This one in particular is near the...

    Culturing pods questions

Hopefully some of you out there have done this and can help me out a bit. I run a small HOB on my fuge that has a decent pod pop. When I clean the media I usually go through and toss out the adult pods I find in it back into the fuge. Today as I was doing this I got the idea to attempt to...

If your magfloat is taking it off then its not likely coraline. My mag wont touch it. Has to be scraped.

do i really need to add calcium?

Most salt mixes make that estimation using treated tap water which contains calcium. When we use RO/DI water, which you should be doing, there is no calcium other than whats in your salt mix. Get a calcium test kit and a bottle of Kent calcium supplement. Get your tank up around 400. Test...

Two return pumps instead of one?

600GPH into your sump should be fine. More circualtion in the tank itself should be added however. Most shoot for 15 to 20x turn over in the tank useing power heads or spray bars . Considering your head you may want to buy a higher flow pump for the sump. The rateings for the pumps you have...

Two return pumps instead of one?

If your overflow box has only one drain and it is 1 inch in diameter the box is a 600GPH overflow and it will only handle one of your pumps. If it has two drains 1 inch diameter it is a 1200 GPH box. Then considering the head it will probably handle both pumps. If the later is the case make...

    LFS Advice

Can you pick up a gallon or so of water at a time? For a system like yours changing out small amounts two or three times a week would aid in replacing any trace elements. IMO water changes even on this small a level is almost always a win win proposition.

    Who's your coral connection?

I am sure everyone knows how difficult it can be finding quality live stock. I am vary fortunate to have a well above average source just minutes from my house and cant help but boast a bit. These guys don't ship so I am assuming I am not stepping on any toes by posting the link here. Anyone...

    Zoo hitchhiker/lighting

About three weeks ago I purchased a colony of yellow polyps. Last night I noticed what looks like a few very small zoos poping up on this rock. Having pretty much just started with corals there are several things I am wondering about. First off are they actually zoos. I don't know what a...

    Temperature control equipment.

IMO none of them really are reliable. I haven't tried the titanium mentioned but pretty much everything else and all will vary in relation to the room temperature, never holding the temp that the thermostat is set to. With that being said I find that the only way to keep temps stable in the...

    Which skimmer is better!

When it comes to skimmers you pretty much get what you pay for. I don't think you will like either of the ones you linked. Better to wait until you can afford a better one than to throw away half the money you need on a good one buying a piece of junk.

Finally got new SW mixing tank and supplies in.w/pic

I would not advise stacking your buckets that high. Eventually the ones on the bottom will start to cave in under the pressure. Three gallon buckets get stacked three high only as a general rule of warehousing.

Nitrates causing problems, looking for some help.

If you can afford it /have room I would set up a larger fuge. 30 gallon tanks work good. Forget the calurpa, especially in the main tank as it will attach itself and grow rapidly and become a problem especially when you want to remove it from your DT. The expanded water volume will dilute...

    my how times have changed

I know how you feel. I left the hobby in 1985 only to return 5 months ago. Things change, evolve and reevolve. Something to keep in mind though and at the risk of sounding like Forrest Gump, "momma always said, keep your old cloths, someday they will come back in style. I have the feeling...
