    Nitrates won't go down?!

I would advise this as well. The EPA drinking water standard for nitrate is 10 ppm: Basic Information about Nitrate in Drinking Water | Basic Information about Regulated Drinking Water Contaminants | US EPA

    Nitrates won't go down?!

I agree that this is worth checking - levels can be fairly high in agricultural areas.

    Too warm?

I suppose it depends on what fish you're keeping if that's a serious issue or not. It would be rather warm for goldfish, for instance.

    Water level getting low

Hello! I always use dechlorinator prior to adding new water to my tank (I believe it's more effective that way) - I add water to my tank via a bucket, so I put the dechlorinator in there and mix it up a bit before gently dumping it into my tank. Additionally, I've hear that Prime water...

Why did my fish fall ill? Help!

My daily water changes are 50 - 75%. I have performed 4 changes since beginning to add salt. No, I don't add 6 tbs; I add only what I remove. I use an 11 quart / 2.75 gallon bucket bucket for water changes. I've been dosing right around 1/2 tbs per bucket removed and replaced as recommended on...

Why did my fish fall ill? Help!

I don't own a scale, unfortunately; I have been using measuring spoons. The current concentration is slightly less than 6 tbsp / 30 gallons, but close to it. I have been adding salt during every water change (I assume it does not accumulate because it dissolves completely in the water). Do you...

Why did my fish fall ill? Help!

Thank you! I apologize for posting twice - I realized after my first post that this was the better place for the thread. Won't do it again! :)

Why did my fish fall ill? Help!

Awesome, thanks venymae! I'm not terribly worried, but I think it's worth mentioning - the ryukin is spending a fair amount of time at the surface. She doesn't seem to be terribly stressed / gulping for air, but I'm still a little worried. Could the heat / salinity be causing this? Thanks!

Why did my fish fall ill? Help!

Thank you all. My temperature is between 75 and 77 degrees. I have been adding aquarium salt with daily water changes a little below the recommended amount of 1 tbs per 5 gallons. Yes, I dissolve the salt before adding it. To my knowledge I have removed all of the ich meds - I've done several...

Why did my fish fall ill? Help!

My little moor has passed :( The ryukin is still looking good. However, a few white spots have reappeared on his fins. I've started a very gradual increase in temperature and begun adding aquarium salt during my daily water changes in an effort to combat the ich. I'm going to hold off on it...

Why did my fish fall ill? Help!

Thank you both for your advice! As I posted in my other thread, the moor hasn't changed - still looks like he won't make it :( I've read up extensively on tank cycling and am trying to utilize all the advice I'm getting :)

Why did my fish fall ill? Help!

Thank you venymae and Roz! Poor little guy is still hanging on, but there hasn't been any improvement. On the bright side, after stopping medication, doing partial water changes (with conditioning), and adding aquarium salt to the main aquarium, my ryukin appears to have recovered.

Why did my fish fall ill? Help!

Thank you both. I've done the partial water change for my ryukin and removed my moor to the 5 gallon as suggested. It doesn't look hopeful, but I owe it to him to try everything I can.

Why did my fish fall ill? Help!

I did my best with the pictures...didn't want to cause him any more stress / pain. As I mentioned, he seems to be on his last breaths. Hard to see, but he has small, white spots on his body (the quantity of spots has decreased since medicating). As you can probably tell, his color has also...

Why did my fish fall ill? Help!

Thank you both for your advice! Roz: I have an API master freshwater test kit. I've been doing partial water changes every day since purchasing the fish because the tank is un-cycled - I suppose this is why the tank parameters are so low? Thinking more about this, maybe the frequent water...

Why did my fish fall ill? Help!

Hello! I'm a new member and new aquarium owner. I also posted in the 'getting started' thread, but thought this might be a more appropriate place for my problem. I have a 30 gallon freshwater tank with plastic plants, decorations, gravel, a heater (set to 73 degrees), a filter (Fluval...

Why did my fish fall ill? Help!

Thanks for your reply. All that I know about tank cycling is that its purpose is to establish a bacterial community in the tank in order to effectively remove harmful quantities of ammonia, nitrate, and nitrite. I'm not sure how long a tank should be cycled for, however. A Petsmart employee told...

Why did my fish fall ill? Help!

Trouble with new tank Hello, new member here! Also new to the aquarium scene :) I have a 30 gallon freshwater tank that I set up with plastic plants, decorations, gravel, a heater, a filter (Fluval Aquaclear for 50 gal), and two air stones. I let the tank cycle for approximately 5 days (per...
