I used the carib sea cichlid substrate, Fluval 406 filter, Whisper air pump. I've had good luck with it. The carib cichlid sand has live bacteria " they says" so I didn't rinse it.

I'd run all the filters with the new canister and after a month take one power filter offline and after a few weeks start bring the old canister offline and rework it.

I had them in a tank that i had neglected water changes once. I got more diligent with WC and that took care of them.
