I've always had a betta with various fish. They've done fine with any fish except other bettas.

TMaier I think you are right that I am going to have to get rid of this sand and start again from scratch. After 12 cycles filling, agitating, and draining the tank 100%, I refilled with a trickle and this is the result. There's a white 'fog' coming off the sand that will not go away.

We'll see! I'm in the process of trying to clean it out. I took all the animals out, drained it, and now I'm fill-stir-drain-filling to try to get it cleared out.

I think you are all correct that the turtle is doing it and the cloudiness is the sand. The turtle was in there before, and last time I set it up I used play sand from Home Depot. Didn't have any issues. Maybe there was something else in it this time. I should have used pool sand indeed.

Anyone know what's wrong with this fish? Its just swimming back and forth and making jerking motions. It chases away its friends. When I fed the tank it didn't even notice.

Assassin snails can be hard to find. You'll need to call local fish stores and when/if they get them in they sell out fast. Also try a clown loach, they eat snails but they can also reach 12" so have a plan to "retire" him. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G900A using Aquarium Advice mobile app

The turtle is a male stinkpot so his full grown size should be only 4". He is about 2" now, so he should double in a couple years. Just don't want to stock a happy tank now and end up with problems. What measure do you use to stock your fish tank?

Quick flyby of the tank. Still need to add more fish, but I haven't calculated my max load yet. Not sure how the turtle will affect how many fish I can have just yet.

I removed that top slate and added 2 pieces of driftwood. Opened it up a bit and in think Leo will like the basking log better than the slate rock. Its kind of hard to see in these photos.

LFS had these vallisneria for sale so I bought some and planted it along the baxkground.

That could be a factor, my water temp is 78-80. I also had a wavemaker there.
