My aquarium's history and a question about lighting

I built a DIY hood for my 10G.... basically a plywood box with a acrylic bottom... pretty simple, and cheap since I had to buy was the acrylic. For the fixtures I purchesed the 2x13W bright kit from AHsupply.com It has served me well; but I wish I got the deluxe kit with effecient reflectors...

    Fish keep movin' on.

Yea, decomposing fish will release alot of ammonia into the tank; probably more then your existing cycle bacteria can handle. Wouldn't be surprised if that was your issue.

    Newbie to Cichlids, apisto questions

Is a 10G enough space for 1 male and 2 females? The Cichlid forums 'cookie cutter' suggests a M/F pair and a few white clouds or zebra danios. Are they using these as dither fish? Are apisto's shy enough to warrant dithers? Another question, most sources seem to suggest a sand substrate for...

    sand or gravel

It's usually a 'natural' sand color. Like a tan. It's very inexpensive too. I had some in my planted tank and it worked out pretty well.

    Newbie to Cichlids, apisto questions

Thanks for the tips everyone, I was thinking cacatuoides, as these are attractive and the most common, so they will more easy to find when I set up my tank. I've seen some nice specimens of agassizii as well. I'm open to suggestion though.

    Newbie to Cichlids, apisto questions

Hello, I presently have a 10gal tank that's sitting empty. I'd like to try some apistos ; I plan on following one of the 10gal 'cookie cutters' from cichlid-forum. I imagine these stock lists would be appropriate? The tank will be moderately planted. My main question is about feeding; what...

    More PlantXchange!

I've got enough plants for another small package of the above if anyone else is interested. $5 shipped. I also have some random aquarium chemicals I don't need anymore, I'll give these away for shipping if anyone wants them. I've got an almost full 8oz bottle of Leaf Zone fertilizer An...

    More PlantXchange!

Hello all, I'll be tearing my tank down for a move on wednesday, and will be thinning out my plants in the process. I have enough of the following for one fairly hefty package: Dwarf sag R. rotundifolia Bocapa australis Echinodorus latifolius As I rip the tank down, I may find I have more...

    Journal: 273L Europe-Wave-100 - update - 1.5 years

Super-Attractive, and amazing.... I'm deeply impressed thus far! What made you go with a wave front tank, out of curiosity? Haven't really seen many of them, so i'm not really sure how I feel about them

    planting E. tenellus

Yes, take them out of the pots. Do so as carefully as possible, so you don't damage the roots more then needed. I sould spread them evenly throughout the area you'd like them to eventually cover. If they're happy they'll reproduce quickly. It's ok if you end having to move them around, IME...

    how to dose grants?

"if" indeed The only stump remover I've seen abolutely accepted as a safe source of NO3 is Green light stump remover. I've never heard of the brand you have, and we have no way of knowing if it really is pure KNO3 or if it has other additives. Before using it I would contact the manufacturer...

    Cloudy Water

Looks like a slight algae bloom, aka a light case of green water. Can be cleared up with a diatom filter, UV sterilizer, or a blackout. caused by too much light and/or not enough nutrients Do you have any test kits? What are your levels like?

Blue Green Slime Algea or Cyanobacteria??

Blue green algae ais the common name for cyanobacteria. It is generally caused by very low nitrates, so you have a NO3 test kit? Maracyn or a black out will kill the algea in many cases. Maracyn does not generally damage the bio-filter, but I would monitor nitrite and ammonia level just to be...

    filter outputs

I currently run an AC 20 on my 10 gallon. Great filter, I'd certainly buy it again if given the chance. I too find I need to clean the impeller once a month or so too- mine will refuse to turn on when I plug it back in after a water change whenever it needs cleaning.

    glutaraldehyde

As I understand, it's intended use is as a cold sterilizer for doctor's tools. It's a strong protien cross-linker (read: can really mess up any living thing's day with a high enough concentraton). Apparently plants can also use it as a carbon source. It should be safe to aquatic life in very...
