    Tank design

It does help, thanks! The idea behind the two sump drains is that if one fails or somehow clogs, the other could still handle the duty. The chances of that are probably 1 in a million, but better safe than sorry. Unfortunately, I can't put an overflow / sump drain on the side of the tank...

    Tank design

Anybody? I'll be ordering the tank this week but would like to get some second opinions first... I'm kind of afraid to order a tank when I'm a newbie without having someone peer review it.

    Tank design

I have a FOWLR tank, but I'll be delving into a reef tank for the first time. I have a specific space I want the tank to occupy, so it'll be a custom build... both sides of the tank are surrounded by walls, but the front and back will both be visible (hence the side Calflo). Since it's my...

    Protein skimmer setup (pictures attached)

Just wanted to pudate that I tried your suggestions tonight, and it worked the very first time. It might've been the positioning of my pump, it might've been the length, I might have not set the knob properly.... I don't know, but I tried everything you guys said and it worked. Thank you so...

    Protein skimmer setup (pictures attached)

Thanks guys, this is fantastic! I'll try your suggestions tonight, I'm due for a water change and that'll be a great time to try to get the skimmer fixed as well. Geeze rfc, that tank looks a million times cleaner than mine. I know that's largely due to newness, better lighting, and better...

    Protein skimmer setup (pictures attached)

Hi folks. :) I've had my 55-gal tank running several months now. I've shockingly had no problems, particularly shocking since I'm using no filtration whatsoever. Just a buttload of live rock and two powerheads. I've tried to get my skimmer hooked up but was unsuccessful. Alas, the surface...

    Ich or not ich?

Thanks for the replies! He is using a refractometer, calibrated with distilled water. Salinity in the QT tank was kept at 1.009, and he said it may have gotten up to 1.010 but doubtful it went much higher. The ich (assuming that's what it is) didn't reappear except for on the butterfly fish...

    Ich or not ich?

Hi all. I'm hoping someone might know what's wrong with a friend's tank. We originally thought it was ich, but now it seems like it may be something else. It may have started after the purchase of a bunch of live rock from a LFS, taken from various tanks in the store. Not long after, little...

    Am i underfeeding?

The feed disappears pretty well, largely thanks to Fonzie (the tang) who was apparently cross-bred with a Hoover. I have a lot of live rock the food gets caught on, maybe I'll pick up another shrimp on the way home today. I do dissolve the cube before putting it in. This is the first I've...

    Am i underfeeding?

I hate to just echo a topic when it sounds like you've already covered it, but now I'm pretty concerned. I've been feeding two cubes and a tiny smattering of flakes each day to this: 1 yellow tang 1 blue koran angel (he's temporary) 1 clownfish 1 bicolor angel 1 sixline wrasse 1 cleaner...

    Yet another fishlist

Thanks guys! It's fish only with live rock. It's somewhat of a practice tank, and if things go well I'll move to reef setup in a couple years. That'd be with an entirely new setup though, so I'm not too worried about the conversion to reef until it happens. Substrate is play sand, bought at...

    Yet another fishlist

Can anyone comment on this fish list? 75 gallon tank... Clownfish Cream angel Flame angel Sixline wrasse Royal Gramma Yellow tang Chocolate chip starfish x # of Cleaner shrimp y # of Snails Some questions: 1. How would this look for a 55 gallon tank? 2. Would the angels fight? 3. Any...

    Order of Operations

Excellent, thanks all for your advice! In the end though I decided I couldn't wait and tossed the fish in before I left for work this morning, I hope the little buggers are alive when I get home. Just kidding of course. I'll be very kind to my fishies.

    Order of Operations

Is there anything wrong with setting things up in this order? 1. Assemble parts to tank (powerheads, protein skimmer) 2. Put in sand 3. Mix treated tap water and salt simultaneously, pour into tank and mix there until dissolved. 4. Turn on powerheads 5. Once salinity is correct, add live rock...

to skim or not to skim...

Gotcha, thanks for the info. :) I had been considering using them to cycle my tank in addition to live rock because, well, they're pretty, but if the fish wouldn't like it then it's out of the question. I was hoping it was more like the question of whether lobsters feel pain when they're...

to skim or not to skim...

Is cycling with fish considered wrong by some because of the higher chance they'll die, or do the fish actually feel worse (i.e. sick) as it cycles? Or is this one of those open-to-debate questions where there's not a known, clear cut answer...

Where did you buy your sand?

Is yours white? I had been thinking the sand was supposed to be white, but maybe I'm wrong... they have the normal tannish color, is is possible for the tan kind to pass the vinegar test?

Where did you buy your sand?

Sorry to hijack a new thread like this since I was already asking about it in a different one. But sand is the last component I need before I can get my tank started, so I'm hoping to get an answer. :) Where did you buy your sand? I've looked at a few area Home Depots and Lowes, but they only...

    SAND BED

Actually, here’s a better way to phrase my question that’ll probably get more responses... Where did you buy your sand?

    SAND BED

I went back to a couple Home Depots and a Lowes today, but none of them had that type of sand. Does anyone know of any other places that sell it?

    SAND BED

I did see some Old Castle at ye ol' Home Depot today, I'll have to check that out again. Thanks HoopsGuru! Go Spurs!

    SAND BED

Is there any way to know what the right sand is to buy? I see "play sand" at Lowe's and Home Depot... how can I know if it'll pass the vinegar test? I can't just open the bag at the store. Well, maybe if no one's looking, but it'd be better if I just knew what kind was okay. :)

Getting started ... Fluff and others please help

You mean there's a noticeable physical difference? I guess I'd just assumed I'd only be able to tell how the cycling was going by testing the water.

    LR versus filter media

Jc, sorry to hijack your thread, but I noticed your location. I’m starting up a saltwater tank in San Antonio too, also a first-timer. Have you found any good fish stores in the area? So far the only two I know of are on Bandera (I forget its name, it’s a semi-bigger place east of Huebner)...
