Vacation while Fishless Cycle not complete

I've been cycling my 8 gallon Bio Orb for weeks now and I still haven't seen any nitrates or nitrites. Next week I'm heading out of town for 4 nights. I have someone feeding the cats and fish in my other tank but what do I do about this partially complete fishless cycle? I just did a PWC...

    Seachem Prime and Fishless Cycle

Well I had done a pretty big water change because my PH was dropping. Everything still looked good after adding ammonia so I added 5 endler's livebearers and a Pleco. AFter 24 hours everyone seems happy. Although the Pleco is hiding under something today. He hid for a while then started...

    Seachem Prime and Fishless Cycle

Thanks! I actually had the same readings yesterday, added ammonia yesterday to see how fast it cycled and it was all gone in the morning.

    Seachem Prime and Fishless Cycle

Is it common for everything to drop to 0 overnight? I don't even have Nitrate anymore even though just yesterday it was at 80! Am I done?

    Seachem Prime and Fishless Cycle

I'm following the fishless cycle process I found on forums here and also on the Dr. Tim Aquatics site. I used his Ammonia. From what I've read partial water changes are needed if the PH drops or if the Nitrite gets so high it's off the charts. this restores buffers. I've been at this for...

    Seachem Prime and Fishless Cycle

I've been cycling a 5 gallon FluVal tank and it's been very slow going. It's been sort of one step foreward one step back. Today I was about to do a partial water change because my PH is dropping and my Nitrites are at or above 5.0. I just happened to really read the directions on the dechlor...

    Problem Cycling 5 Gallon Fluval

That's what I did. I'll test again later today and see what happened with the ammonia I added last night. When I checked ammonia yesterday afternoon it was reading Ammonia of only 1 or 2 so I'm thinking I didn't put enough in. I'm using the dr. Tim's aquarium ammonia and followed the...

Bio Orb 30L what to do?

Good tip about pantyhose. Now let me see if I can go back to the 80s when we all wore those... I've already got 2 cats, at least the fish don't wake me up at 4am wanting attention or hacking up a fur ball on the rug. I can't grow live plants in a biorb. I've ordered some silk plants and I...

Bio Orb 30L what to do?

What are you using for slime coat? All I treat the water with is the Seachum Prime Dechlor the fish store sold me. I had this idea that fish would be an easy pet for my daughter, it's turning into a whole science experiment for Mommy. Another question. I've got this drift wood that I had...

    Problem Cycling 5 Gallon Fluval

I'm Using The API master test kit. That's what has me puzzled. I have one tiny little plant. I added a decent amount of seeding material from my existing tank and at one point added about half a gallon of water from the existing tank to get things going. I did go away for Mother's day...

    Problem Cycling 5 Gallon Fluval

Cycling a 5 gallon Fluval Spec and I need some advise. The thing is that it's so small evaporation and the tiny amount I take to test the water daily keeps causing me to need to top off the tank. I have to do it for the 3rd time today in the 9 days I've been at this. Can I trust the readings...

Bio Orb 30L what to do?

Really? I had heard 50% only in the event of something rather large like a fish dying. I worry about us not keeping a good bio filter if I change much more than 30% weekly especially on such a small tank.

Bio Orb 30L what to do?

Great tip! With a heated tank do I need to heat the new water before adding it to the tank? I have always put water in a bucket and treated it then left it n the room for a few hours to come to room temp. A pwc on an 8 gallon is only 2 gallons so it doesn't rake long to warm up.

Bio Orb 30L what to do?

Thanks! I'll probably just get a heater since it seems to make the choices easier.

    dead fish - now what?

a few days before adding the drift wood the Nitrate was up around 30 so I did a PWC of 25%. Then it went to 0 and has stayed there for over a week even after the fish went belly up. I'm using the API master test kit and I've been testing every day since the fish started hiding and hanging out...

Bio Orb 30L what to do?

I'm re-setting up my bio orb 30L after another goldfish death. Pretty much we've determined that it's just too small for goldfish. I would love to add plants but Ive read that bio orbs do not do well with plants for a whole bunch of reasons. So I'm stuck with no live plants in there. I don't...

    dead fish - now what?

Set up after dead fish Awesome! Should I put the driftwood back in the tank? My tap water PH after adding the seachum prime dechlor is 7.2 on the high range PH test. In the tank though it looks like 8.0 or 8.2 to me. Not sure what is taking the PH up so high. I will look to add a plant now...

    dead fish - now what?

OK. but what should I do about the water in the tank now. dead fish in there for as much as 48 hours, no way to know. How do I prepare it for new fish? Full water change and fishless cycle or 50% water change and test the water?

    dead fish - now what?

If the tank was too small then wouldn't I see ammonia or nitrate spikes? Testing showed perfect readings. Ironically he was totally fine until I started getting all fancy and tested the water. The first 2 fish died because I had a nanny taking care of the tank and I found out she was cleaning...

    dead fish - now what?

My little black goldfish had been doing fantastic in his bioorb flow 8 gallon tank for 6 months until I put a bit of drift wood in there. suddenly I found him on the bottom and he only lasted a few days after that despite the fact that the water was testing perfect. They tank had cycled, I've...

Black Moor Goldfish hanging on bottom

I did the pwc. He swam around for a bit but didn't eat. I'm not back home till Sunday so just hoping for the best. Checked the water again and ammonia 0, nitrate 0, nitrite 0, ph 8.0. So pretty perfect for a goldfish I don't get it. And I've on,y got one tiny tiny goldfish in that tank. If...

Black Moor Goldfish hanging on bottom

Help! This morning he's laying on the bottom of the tank! And we're going away for the weekend, yipes! Should I do another partial water change?

Black Moor Goldfish hanging on bottom

We have a black moor goldfish that has been dong really well until suddenly today I couldn't find him, found him hanging out at the bottom of the tank hardly moving. The only recent change is I added driftwood and changed my declor to Seachem prime (based on fish store advise, something about a...
