How well did you rinse the substrate, and how much do you stir it up when you add water?

    Substrate heater

You definitely don't need a substrate heater if you have a regular heater in your tank. As long as it doesn't get below 70 in the tank at any time, you don't need any heater.

Beware Tube Plants (even known aquatics)

I think I got two swords, and a rhizome plant that I don't know what it's called. That one is spreading across a low, very very low tech 10g betta tank. I think the rhizome is 5 inches long with ten or so stems with a leaf. (by very low tech, I mean I turn the light on and off and do PWCs...

How can I make the middle of my tank more of a focal point?

Honestly, I would've went and bought a statue. I like the all natural look but I cave for those serene "Buddha" like things.

Is it possible to run a fixture across the back or sides to shine into the tank closer to the plants, maybe at an angle?

    50 gallon stock

I personally would have gotten 7 khulis, for my 55g, if I had gotten sand instead of gravel. They would have been the only loaches. With your 3 angelicus botias, I would get 4-7 khulis.

    50 gallon stock

Try it and see. You can also check AqAdvisor. I guess I just imagine the loaches all crowded, with that many.

    50 gallon stock

He should explain what he meant by that. Some people say it is that way only because it could mean a ten inch fish can fit a 10g tank. Others say you don't have to follow it exactly, but to find the "true" amount of oxygen available per tank based on footprint, and go by that for stocking. And...

    Opinion On My Cycle

The problem with the water changes is that you remove the "food" (ammonia) that the bacteria feeds on, not giving it much time to establish and use the ammonia, to turn into nitrites, to then feed the bacteria to turn the nitrites to nitrates. ** I hadn't though of improper testing don't mind me **

    50 gallon stock

It is based off the amount of oxygen available, as well as actual living space and ammonia buildup. It is not purely for beginners or "small" tanks.

    50 gallon stock

I would bring the number of khulis down to 8, and add 5 scissor tail rasboras. they are top dwelling but do reach 5in each. another option that wouldn't lead to overstocking would be black skirt tetras, although if they are not in a large enough school (6+) they may nip the angels.

    New african cichlid tank.

I would add a few large rocks. The heater would keep a steady temp. Looks good.

    Cleaning gravel

Usually, the gravel won't need but a skim off the top, in the open areas of the planted tank.
