Can I put a Plecostomus with my African Cichlids?

I run lights about 10 hours a day, run the moon glows about 2 hours Sent from my SGH-M919 using Aquarium Advice mobile app

    Filtration advice

Sounds simple enough, so I could just run a cannister in conjunction with my existing HOB's, right?

    Filtration advice

When you say you clean the filters, you mean you just throw away the cartridges right? I'm not exactly familiar with cannister but like with my Emperor 400, I just change the filter cartridges about once every 6 weeks but don't touch the biowheels. Or when you said you clean them every 4 weeks...

    Filtration advice

Gotcha, makes good sense. Basically buying another filter would help with not having to do as many water changes and improve current in the water but it's not something that if I don't buy, my fish won't survive. I guess i can see both sides of that, it wouldn't hurt to have but it's not...

    Filtration advice

Ok so I have a 75 gallon tank that I've had up and running for about a month with African Cichlids. I have an Emperor 400 and a BioWheel Penguin 200 filter that go over the back of the tank. Common sense tells me that's plenty of filtration but to me, the water looks ever so slightly cloudy...

Can I put a Plecostomus with my African Cichlids?

Sounds good, mine are only about an inch long right now so I don't think they will be a threat if I get a pleco that's at least a couple inches in length Sent from my SGH-M919 using Aquarium Advice mobile app

Can I put a Plecostomus with my African Cichlids?

First off, sorry if this is a noob or rookie question, even though I am fairly new to this. I have a 75 gallon FW tank that I've had set up for about 3 weeks now. I have 6 African Cichlids and a Pictus catfish and I noticed I'm starting to get a good bit of Algae on my rocks. Would a...

Setting up my first aquarium, need advice

Also, great advice about getting my own test kit, much more convenient than taking samples up to the fish store 3 times a week. I think after I get some Holey rock in place maybe the pH will be where it needs to be. As of Sunday, everything looked great except for the pH which was a 7.6 so maybe...

Setting up my first aquarium, need advice

My apologies, I did mean the pH was too low, sorry for the confusion. Yes I'm trying to slightly raise it, and I personally thought water changes might be preventing this. Maybe I should do only 25% changes until the tank cycles?? I will definitely look into the bacteria in a bottle if my water...

Setting up my first aquarium, need advice

That's correct, I'm going with African Cichlids. The man I talked to says that the reason my pH level is too high is because I've been removing too much water when I change but I imagine it's because the tank hasn't even cycled for a week so it's still stabilizing. One more water change might...

Setting up my first aquarium, need advice

Ok so I took a bag of water up to the store to get it tested, all the numbers looked good except the pH is still low, registered as a 7.4. They acted like I could go ahead and add some fish but I really would like to get that number higher first. I tried to buy some limestone but apparently they...

So.....what are my options if I stock my tank with African Cichlids?

Ok driftwood sounds like it's probably not a great option, I'll just get some more limestone instead

So.....what are my options if I stock my tank with African Cichlids?

I just checked out that Live Fish Direct website, and I'll tell you how oblivious I am, I didn't even know you could have fish shipped directly to your door overnight lmao. My head is spinning from all the different variety of African Cichlids, I've only seen a few different type at local fish...

So.....what are my options if I stock my tank with African Cichlids?

That's very useful, thank you!! I'll read up on all them, only problem is I'm not sure there's a store around here that stocks any of those, we only have like 1 or 2 aquatic stores around here (other than Petco).I've always heard mixed comments about buying from Petco, but when I've been in...

So.....what are my options if I stock my tank with African Cichlids?

I appreciate the heads up. I know Oscars can sometimes get huge, up to 12 inches or more, just assumed that they only grow as big as their environment. I do think that I will forget about getting an Oscar and mainly stick to African Cichlids as that seems to be my best option.

Question about Penguin Bio Wheel 200 filter....

If I were to try to run 2 filters, should they both face the same way (blue fuzzy part facing to the back) or place the filters back to back?

Question about Penguin Bio Wheel 200 filter....

I went and purchased a box of filter cartridges for it. I looked online and haven't had any luck finding instructions.

So.....what are my options if I stock my tank with African Cichlids?

Ok so I'm somewhat new to the aquarium lifestyle, I've had tanks before but they were already stocked and given to me. I aquired a 75 gallon tank and I originally planned on going with an Oscar and a few various cichlids. I am embarrassed to say this but I didn't know the difference between...

Question about Penguin Bio Wheel 200 filter....

So I'm setting up a 75 gallon FW tank, it came with an Emperor 400 filter, which is probably enough for my tank, but I also found my old Penguin Bio Wheel 200 laying around, so I was going to use that as well. I opened it up and saw that it was completely empty, no filter cartridges in it. It...

Ok I'll try that, maybe a 50% change tonight and a 50% change in 3 days. I imagine that should make a difference

Setting up my first aquarium, need advice

I was planning on keeping Cichlids and adding an Oscar eventually, I have heard mixed things about them as far as being easy or hard to maintain. A few years back I did have a couple Fire Mouth Cichlids in my 20 gallon and they lived 6 or 7 years and never seemed to get sick although they were...

Setting up my first aquarium, need advice

Just started reading the article "Getting Started", guess I should have been reading it from the get go lol. Anyways there's some good info on there, I'll read it over real good and then decide which option to do for cycling.

Setting up my first aquarium, need advice

I appreciate the advice, guys. I don't currently have any other tank running. I had a 20 gallon a couple years ago, was mainly just full of tetras. I'm not exactly familiar with canister filters.....do they sit underneath the tank?
