    DIY Chiller idea??'s

From what I understand there is only one metal that won't corrode in saltwater and that is Titanium. The other one that you can use but will eventually corrode is 316 Stainless Steel .

    newb to DIY - refugium

Yes, more than likely the PH's are pushing different rates. I highly doubt that you will ever find two pumps that are exactly the same. Best bet is to gravity feed this thing somehow and have only one pump. Maybe you could post some pics of your setup so we could get a better idea of what you...

    Need help with DIY hood!

Cool, if yours is a 72, it should be alot easier than my 46 because I think the bow is actually less and spans a greater distance. All I did with mine was cut two rings out of MDF using a template traced from the top of the tank.. In the above image you can see the ring that sits on the bottom...

What size bowfront do you have ? I built a custom canopy for my 46 bow front and would be more than happy to share some pics of it while it was in progress!

    Custom canopy and lighting

Quick update.... Just installed a 110V 105CFM 120mm fan inside the canopy to help bring temps down and get some airflow. Makes a bit of noise but too bad and the position it is mounted in inside the canopy gives my tanks water surface a good swirl and keeps every inch of the surface moving. Will...

OK, here are some updated pics. The moonlights havent been installed yet, i just ordered 100 5000mcd 5mm leds for 11 bucks and should be here this week. Also there is a thin rubber gasket that is going to be mounted between the lid and the canopy itself to seal it off. Got 2 new Actinic O3' NO...

    Custom canopy and lighting

Well I plan on having 2 of those ballasts. One to run the SHO lights and one for the NO 03's. So the 12000k bulbs are on the blue side huh? Im guessing from what i have read that 9325k bulbs would be more white? I found them for 14 bucks each so not a bad deal. Im working on the paint right...

    Compact fluorescents

Cool, was jut mainly wanting to know if these were the correct bulbs for a reef. I just ordered 2 12000k bulbs like these for 38 bucks shipped! Not bad at all, besides they lfs where i live is terrible. The owners are very rude and not in any way friendly at all.

    Compact fluorescents

Correct me if im wrong but is this the right spectrum of light to simulate daylight in a saltwater reef? If so, why are these bulbs 40 bucks in the lfs? http://gallery.bcentral.com/GID4905454P3552486-GE-Lamps/GE-Aquarium-Fluorescents/F55BX-AR-FS.aspx

    Custom canopy and lighting

Ok, just got some new pics of the lighting fixture. Remeber this is only "dried in" and will have a few extras when it is finished. The reflector and the SHO plugs are out of a Perfecto 36" SHO light strip. I pulled it out and flattened the sides out to make room for the NO fluorescents. All...

    Custom canopy and lighting

Lol, thanks. Well the actuall wiring for the fixtures will be enclosed in a sealed section of the canopy, so the only thing really exposed would be the "tombstones" for the fluorescents and the SHO lights. As far as bending that piece for the front. I originally bought a 2'x4'x1/8" piece of...

Its turned out pretty good in my opinion based on my limited woodworking skills and tools. Also, i have decided to remote mount the ballasts for my lights in a...

Guidence on compact power lighting fixtures

I am working on a custom canopy right now for my 46 gallon reef and it will have 2 55 watt SHO lights in it. This is the ballast that a "lighting technician" suggested t ome to use for both the SHO lights and my normal flourescents, only the wiring changes for the two...
