    Neither of these steps worked. The filter is still making the exact same grinding noise. I am going to take it back and go with an internal filter. but i am not sure yet.

    I just bought a new aqua clear filter for the 30 gallon aquarium in my bedroom. It makes a fairly loud grinding noise.
