    Anacharis and Moneywort dead...

Yeah I figured I'd probably need more CO2 so I just added a second 2L bottle to my yeast system. Hopefully within 24 hours that'll kick it up a bit. I'm not dosing any excel, and I'm probably going under 15ppm of pottasium. I'm measuring by capfuls and I didn't want to overdo it, but I'm...

    Anacharis and Moneywort dead...

I recently finally got around to purchasing a bunch of plants and heavily planting my tank with Cabomba, Anacharis, Moneywort, Hornwort, Ludwigia, Java Fern, Anubias Nana Petite, Blyxa Japonica and Java Fern. I seemed to had finally gotten everything right; my nutrients were balanced and my...

    Shrimp / Blue Ram dilemna

Yeah I put some of those in with some small zebra danios expecting that there'd be no problem, and even a few of the zebras picked on them for a while. My gourami couldn't care less about them and pretty much just acts like he doesn't even see them. Now that they're bigger the zebras leave...

    Is a Aquarium an Ecosystem?

Yeah I suppose if you have plants and a good varied stock of fish and inverts with a solid life cycle going then it's definately an ecosystem. Although, my tank certainly is dependent on me keeping it in check with water changes and fertilization so I guess you'd just have to say I'm part of...

    java moss

I made that mistake the first time I tried it out and ended up with none of it grabbing because the moss at the bottom of the clump died. Second time around I spread it around thinly and tied it with thread, and it grew out well but as the thread rots it dangles around and is hard to pick out...

    CO2 at night?

Yeah that sounds like a good idea, I hadn't thought of controlling CO2 levels by how quickly they're outgassed. I run my aquaclear on the lowest setting during the day as well, so I'll try turning up the current at night. As it is, I left the CO2 on and this morning the PH was 6.8 (possibly...

    CO2 at night?

I probably read that somewhere on a website about releasing CO2 as a respiration byproduct in the absence of light, but I can't remember where so who knows how good the source was :) . My water out of the tap is a ph of 8.2 and kh of 6 (ran through my faucet filter), so I'm guessing when the...

How do you read your liquid test kit?

Yeah I tend to do the same. Put it up in the sunlight held against the card, but even then I don't trust myself so I take a consensus of everyone in my house at the time in hopes that someone can tell better than me :?

    CO2 at night?

From what I've read it seems that you want to shut your CO2 off when the lights go out since the plants aren't using it and are in fact releasing CO2, but will the PH spike hurt more than a CO2 spike? Mine goes from just under a neutral PH to just over 8.0 by morning...

    Can I add more?

Yeah my gourami is fairly peaceful but he does snap at the danios sometimes during feeding and they're too fast to catch so I'd worry about neons. Luckily he couldn't care less about the shrimp.

    Can I add more?

I have a 20 gallon long planted tank with 5 zebra danios, one pearl gourami and a bunch of cherry shrimp (I think 8 ). The tank is soon to be heavily planted but right now I just have hornwort, 2 anubias nana dwarfs, 2 small java ferns and some java moss. I was thinking about adding a school...

    Hornwort

I have mine anchored into the gravel as well and it's growing completely out of control. I don't think I could keep it from reaching the surface if I trimmed it every day :) . The bottom is kind've brown, but it certainly doesn't affect the rest of the plant.

    DIY CO2 still not working...

I think I found out what one of my biggest problems was. I took off the gang valve and just sent the line straight through and it's now producing a bubble every 2 seconds. Either it was too restrictive and I had a leak elsewhere or the valve itself was leaking. Also, I mixed way too much...

    DIY CO2 still not working...

Okay... I remanufactured my seals completely using a household plastic cement for the initial bonding and then put another layer of aquarium silicone around the seal on the inside an outside of the cap once the initial seal dried. I put my 2L bottle in a 3gal bucket and put a small aquarium...

    DIY CO2 still not working...

Cool, that sounds like a good idea. I was thinking of somehow putting a heater inside the bottle but decided that wouldn't work out too well obviously. I'll try that out and let you all know how it goes. Also, I have a feeling that my seals are in fact maybe leaking a slight bit. I'll...

    DIY CO2 still not working...

Unfortunately I'm out of town right now so I can't take a pic, but for now I just have a silicone tube directing the bubbles into the intake of my aquaclear until I get this yeast thing figured out. I mostly have been using this site for reference http://www.qsl.net/w2wdx/aquaria/diyco2.html .

    DIY CO2 still not working...

I remade my yeast CO2 container about a week ago and it worked quite well up until now. It wasn't producing very quickly, about 1 bubble per 8 to 10 seconds, but it seemed to work. Could it be a temperature problem? It was very warm for this time of year last week, and now it's cold again...

My 50 Gallon with a home made stand

That stand is beautiful. I'm hoping to do that sometime in the future for a 75 gallon so now I have the perfect inspiration. Lets hope I have the skills as well :) . I can't wait to see more pics as the tank progresses!

    filter output

Yeah my aquaclear is definately pretty sweet. Extremely easy to clean, customizeable, and cheap. If you had to replace your topfin 20 I'd second the recommendation for the aquaclear.

    Hornwort...

Yeah I just added another small slimline fixture temporarily until I get my CF light in the mail and the very tips started turning copper. Otherwise everything is quite green.

Using distilled water for a water change

I have to filter my water because unfortunately the parameters of it change constantly out of the tap when my town changes water sources (the filter is built into my faucet so it's easy and relatively cheap). The only reason I use RO water is to replace evaporation between PWC's.

    Hornwort...

Hmm... so would I be better off just weighing the bottom of the hornwort down and letting it sit on top of the substrate, or just leave it buried how it is?

Where do you guys get your driftwood?

Nice! Yeah I tried finding wood near my house, but in New York all you can really find is old bug infested rotting pieces... especially this time of year. Hey PrettyFishies, how's that Aquarium City place near Paramus? I saw it last time I was down there but never checked it out...

Where do you guys get your driftwood?

Wow... excellent prices at aquaticeco, and the next time I'm down near clifton I'll have to check out absolutely fish. Seems like a great store... thanks guys!

Where do you guys get your driftwood?

I've been looking for some nice pieces of driftwood like I've seen in the members showcase to attach java fern and java moss to, but so far I haven't had any luck. I know I can find them online, but does anyone have any suggestions as to what types of stores I should look at (aside from the...
