    New Acquisition – A Steal!

Just picked up a tank in Corpus Christi, TX, and getting ready to add the proper equipment (it's a bare tank with sump and open cabinet) It's 300 gallons; 96W x 30T x 24D; overall height is 5' 11" – what's in the picture was only $1200 (plus two days' use of a U-Haul van) • feels like a steal...

    $200 score!

I can’t even give it away! But I absolutely hate to toss it into the dumpster without trying… What risk is there in plugging it in, just to test it? Should I attach intake and output hoses and dunk the ends in a 5g bucket of water and let it run for 5-15 minutes?

    Cleaning socks

So, perhaps I should re-frame my question, sans humor; I clearly know that you’re not talking about foot covers. What socks are y’all discussing?

    30g Sump/Refugium for 110g

I posted this on my $200 Score thread, but cross posting here for feedback. Scored a 30g for $30 a few days ago to use as sump & refugium for the 110g. Found a really cool CAD app for iOS so, naturally, I had to play with it. And what better way to play? Draw up plans for the sump, of course...

    $200 score!

The 50” on the left and 60” on the right will actually be 60” & 70”, respectively, providing 2 actual inches for filtering material. I plan to use the second large chamber as the fuge. How’s that sound?

Scored a 30g for $30 yesterday; gonna turn it into a sump/fuge… Specs on this picture are off by a factor of 10; couldn’t help it, with the iPad app…

    Hawkfish attacking cleaner shrimp!

A couple of weeks ago I added a small cleaner shrimp to my 75g tank; he didn’t last two days. I presumed that my hawkfish was the culprit because of his general attitude, but I had no proof. Today, I introduced a large cleaner shrimp; within about an hour, I found the hawkfish with a pair of...

Here’s the reason for the higher level of salt deposits on the left overflow plumbing; notice the cracked flange:

Right! I spent most of Friday & Saturday cleaning everything that could be cleaned, disassembling everything that could be, and putting ‘em all back together. I’ve enjoyed that sort of thing all my life… The skimmer is fizzing right along, but no noticeable scum in the funnels yet, so the...

    $200 score!

lol…yeah, the buffer’s in the big box with all the other dumpster chow. There’s actually two skimmers; the CPR and the Pro-Twin. The Pro-Twin runs fine, so it’s getting a good test in the 75’s sump for a week or so…

Quick way to cycle a new tank?

So, all I should have to do is start with 2 gallons of existing water, then slowly bring it up to 4, then it’s safe to move the livestock into the new water…?

Quick way to cycle a new tank?

I won’t be able to do a drip because I don’t have room in the apartment to set up any kind of drip system… Hmmm… Thinking about that right now; half-full 5g bucket of current water for each fish (mated clowns stay together)…½ to 1 cup new water from the 110 per bucket every 10 minutes 16 times...

Quick way to cycle a new tank?

Thanks for clarifying the difference between bacteria! Everything from the 75 will be moved to the 110, simply because the 75 has to be moved from the 64” wide wall to the 43” wide wall; the 43” is narrower than the 75 but only by 5”. The 110 has to go against the wider wall for obvious...

Both pumps work! Found paperwork; it’s an Oceanic Systems Model 4 setup. Looks like some minor parts are missing/replaced… Also has a tall Creative Plastic Research skimmer – cone is busted but the rest is intact & probably unusable because skimmed water/bubbles will reach bottom of collection...

Ran a 15-minute test with the skimmer immersed in tap water; seems to be OK – turns out it’s not a HOB, so that’s awesome! Clean-up time… Next, there’s these two beasties: Maxi-Jet MJ-750 And, no info anywhere on this; anyone have any idea what make/model? Clean-up & testing time!

Quick way to cycle a new tank?

I have to respectfully disagree with the first part of your response. Though the bacteria thrive primarily on the rocks and the substrate, there’s no avoiding them in the water; that pretty much goes without saying. Bet you’d see them under a microscope; wash your hands with hot water and a...
