New home - new water source

Hi all! Just moved into a new home with a well. Tested my water with the API kit. I have 10-20 ppm nitrates and 0.5-1 ppm nitrites. Are those numbers ok for base water? What should I do differently to keep my levels low?

    Injured tetra

What do you all normally do if you find one of your fish missing parts of its fin? :( I know she is just going to suffer. The rest of the fish will continue to nip at her. I have no idea what happened. ? Sent from my iPhone using Aquarium Advice

    How did this happen!?

Can anyone give me an idea of what might have caused this to happen to my thermometer!? I cleaned out the broken glass and did a complete water change just to be safe. :-/ Sent from my iPhone using Aquarium Advice

    Losing catfish

It just seems like an odd and tragic trend. I was wondering that about the species too. Any idea what their normal life span is? With the exception of the 1 skirt tetra, all the other tetras have survived from my initial tank set up. The Cory cats don't seem to do well in there though. Sent...

    Losing catfish

Hi all. I have a 20 gallon tank. I am using the filter that came with it (top fun 20) as well as a top fin 30 over the top filter. My tank is well established - been running a year with its original inhabitants. I had 6 Cory cats as of a few days ago, one stopped swimming. I removed him and put...

    Sick tetra?

He came out, I found him, but I don't think he'll make it through the night in the iso tank. He's on the bottom and barely moving. Sent from my iPhone using Aquarium Advice

    Sick tetra?

He didn't make it :( I can't find him. I'm praying at this point that it is not something that's going to kill my whole tank. Sent from my iPhone using Aquarium Advice

    Sick tetra?

Could he have just been an older fish? Could it be some type of illness? Although I don't know where he would have gotten it from. Sent from my iPhone using Aquarium Advice

    Sick tetra?

Hi, I think one of my neon skirt tetras is ill. It's hard to get a good pic because of the movement, but he looks very skinny. He's eating normally and swimming fine, just skinny. His belly does not appear sunken, it's like his head and body width. He's half the size of the others. I have had...

    Corydoras and feeding

Thanks, I just want to make sure I'm not over feeding, since I do have algae. My last tank was a 6.5 gallon and I never had an algae problem. Not sure what's causing it: Sent from my iPhone using Aquarium Advice

    Corydoras and feeding

Hi all, I have a 20 gallon with 5 corydoras as well as all all of their tank mates (5 glo skirt tetras and 7 neon tetras). I feed them tiny amounts of flakes along with a few sinking pellets for the cat fish. I have read many contradicting things about corydoras and feeding. I have some...

    Algae!

As far as I know it's just regular light bulbs. I know they aren't led or fluorescent. I'll try reducing the lighting time and see if that helps. Shrimp will be ok with the corydoras? Also, with all of the algae that's in the tank, should the cat fish be all set if absolutely no food is...

    Algae!

Algae seems to grow pretty quickly in my tank. I do scrubbing a of the walls of the tank every week when I do a PWC, it seems to grow very rapidly. It is next to a window, so I have even started keeping the light block curtains drawn. Has not fixed the problem. I have read that over feeding...

    Under gravel filters?

I was curious is under gravel filters are any more beneficial to a tank than a canister or exterior filter. More / less maintenance than the other? Better for the bio filter? Sent from my iPhone using Aquarium Advice

    Taking over a SW tank

What is cayno bigger WC mean? I'm somewhat new to aquariums myself and I know nothing about salt water. This is what I am using for the water: It says right on the jug to mix with tap water. I am limited on resources here. I know WC means water change, that I haven't done. I have no equipment...

    Taking over a SW tank

I'm not exactly sure what you mean by fresh water fish don't live in salt water. I'm obviously aware of that. What does that have to do with an algae cleaner? It's a little magnetic thing that scrapes the sides. And I think you misread the food. I'm breaking a tablet of shrimp in half and they...

    Taking over a SW tank

Ok I need some help!!! I have a freshwater aquarium so I have a little experience with tanks, but none with salt water. My supervisor was let go 3 weeks ago and it's become clear that he is not coming back for his tank / fish. He has a clown fish, and urchin, and 2 pink shrimp. We have been...
