friend has six year old FOWLR and wants to add LS. Will this cause a spike that will be detrimental to fish and critters on LR?

If the LS is handled properly, it shouldn't. Where is he getting the LS? Is it mail order or is it from the LFS? Your friend should not add more than 1/2 inch per week to give the critters and bacteria time to migrate up.

I just told him to become a AA member so he could jump into this thread and answer for himself. I believe sand from a LFS.

Thanks got bait? and reefrunner !!

My tank has been up for more than 6 years.
I have only "semi alive" liverock in my tank no sand and the only fish I have left is a 14 in. spotted gruper..

I want to get my reef going again and I want to get some good live sand in there but not kill my fish and a few shrooms and polyps I have in there.
any other suggestions ???

Great fish board glad to join you guys !!!!

any other suggestions ???

Get some dry sand (couple inches worth) and cure it in a bucket with a raw cocktail shrimp for a week or two, add that to your tank, then add a few lbs of quality seeded live sand to jump start the fauna.
