A sump does not have to be directly underneath a tank. It can be alongside the main tank, across the room from the main tank or even in a different part of the building than the main tank. It's usually under the tank because most sumps are set up for gravity fed lines and under the tank is the fastest feed. But there are ways to compensate for that. One way to do an "alongside" sump would be to place the sump on a separate stand next to the main tank where the top of the sump is even with the bottom of the main tank. You just plumb the drain line with 45 degree elbows and use a bigger diameter pipe to compensate for the shorter run. You may have to have the stand made or make it yourself as it may be a custom size but it's a lot better than having to get on the floor to deal with "sump stuff.
