any ideas on what this algae is?

I'm inclined to leave it be, since it looks so cool swaying in the water current, kind of like a filter feeding salt water critter or something.

as long as it stays contained to rocks and driftwood, it's not a problem.

Wow...great picture...what kind of camera did you use?? A digital?
I don't know about the algae either. It kind of looks like one of those wooly bear caterpillars!

Yep, it's hair algae. That stuff is hard to get rid of. If you want to keep looking at that rock I'd suggest taking it out and washing it in very hot plain water. My lfs has 1 tank with a peice of driftwood in it and it's covered with this stuff. Said he hasn't found anything to get rid of it but the fish like it. :D

Looks like BBA, Black Beard Algae. One of the worst. I'd get rid of it before it spreads to other hard surfaces and plants.

I've never had it , but have seen it in other tanks. As I understand, hard to get rid of.

I still think you should test your phosphate levels, Hair algae is a pain in the butt to get rid off.
Even if you emptied your whole tank and scrubbed it clean, there is no curtainty that you would get rid of it. just one pour left in the tank and it would be back. I would remove what ever you have with it on.
I tried to get rid of it for twelve months, i tried every algae remover on the market with no joy. In the end i shut the tank down, cleaned it out and started again. I am saying about phosphate because hairy algae loves it. Hopefully the lower the phosphate the slower it grows. But even with no phosphate it will still grow.
