Anyone know?

Has anyone heard of a Raspberry Bass? Went the a LFS that has nice fish and they had in three of their tanks a small purple about that color fish, they told me it wouldn't get very big, I did notice it moving rocks. They told me it wouldn't get along with a Royal Gramma, we didn't get it we were just talking about the fish we were interested in with the LFS guy. Anyways, now we can't decide wether to go the Royal or this cute purplish lavendar fish. OH and we put a hold on a yellow watchman goby and will pick it up tomorrow, we are very excited he will look cool in our 40 gallon black sand tank! We also saw a dark blue chromis, at least that's what they called it, but then this is the LFS store that we got our unknown "eyelash" blenny as they referred to it as. Still don't know what kind he is. Saw some cool Green banded gobies, they are soooooo small, wish we had gone that way for our 5, they are even smaller than the small blenny we have in there now.

I'm going to be doing some more searching around to see if I can find this raspberry bass, although they spelled it rasberry bass. <sigh>

Argh, nevermind, I found it, it's a Strawberry Basslet, amazing that a fish store can't label their fish correctly, how do they expect anyone to do research on a fish if they can't label it correctly. :?

Remember common names are just that, common. Rather than ask for the common name, try to get the scientific name from the stores (IME many wholesalers would sell the fish by common name, but list the scientific name as well), then a quick google images search using the scientific name should give you some results

Thanks, they have the names up there but no scientific name, and he kept referring to it as a Rasberry Bass. I did a lot of research on what kind would be good for our tank and when we got to the store and saw this small purplish fish we thought it was cool. But couldn't come up with anything for pictures on a Rasberry Bass. SO, went to Live aquaria's site and looked under Basslets, and notice it looked a lot like a Golden Bass they had on there, then did a image search and found the Strawberry, which in fact the more searching I did found out it's actually a purple dottyback, which is the BIG reason I probably wasn't aware of this fish because we read dottybacks are quite mean and didn't want that in our tank.

Also found the exact fish in the dottyback section of the Conscientious Marine Aquarist had it on page 217, I'm really tempted to bring the book in and say, Um, you might want to label it the right way. But I'm not that bold yet, I didn't inherit that part from my grandmother

LOL true!! Didn't get him, got 3 blue green chromis, a yellow watchman goby and a royal gramma basslet. We weren't going the chromis, saw a yellow and blue chromis that I liked, but it jumped out of the net and on to the floor, figured the poor fish was stressed enough and told him we didn't want it. They also had some blue reef chromis, was a real dark blue, beautiful fish, but they wanted 17 bucks for him. We decided to go 3 blue green chromis for 16.99 instead, love the way they schooled, thanks for the suggestion Hara! This is all the fish we will have in the tank, hope we didn't over crowd it. The royal gramma is soooo beautiful especially with the black sand, now if we could just afford good lighting, oh well next time.
