I got a 20-29 gallon rated stand from Walmart, its good looking. However it says to use it for tanks of weight of about 290 lbs.

Now my tank is 29 1/2"l x 12"w x 17" ie about 26 gallon which means :
26 gallons

Now 1 gallon of water = 8.33 lbs
so we are talking about 220 lbs water.

220lbs water + weight of the tank itself + rocks = ???

Will this stand be good for my case ? if not why is it rated for 29 gallons?

I am right in saying 1 gallon of water = 8.33 lbs ?

Yes you are right about the water weight. I set up a 20qt from wally world, in which I used a Microwave stand. It looked better, sturdier, and was cheaper. I think the stand your getting IMO will be fine.

Your math is right on (8.33 lbs/gal).
The general rule of thumb for tank weight guestimation is 10 lbs per gallon - factors in about 1 - 2/3 lbs of rock and gravel per gallon. The weight of the tank itself is negligible compared with the weight of its contents. You'll certainly be at the upper range of the stand rating, but within the range.

I'm sure the tank will be fine. Walmart's lawyers probably put the weight rating on the stand to cover their behinds in case some cheap idiot tried balancing a 300 gal on it.

The Wal Mart stands are nice looking and solid. Just take your time putting it toghether and you should be all set.

I spent almost $200 on an All-Glass stand for my 26g tank and it is a piece of crap. My tank wobbles when I clean the outside of the glass with a side to side motion. For $200, the thing should not allow the tank to wobble. When I move into a new place I am going to reinforce the stand with some internal braces.

I use the Walmart Stand on my 55g Reef Tank.. It works really good as long as you dont get it wet.. I spoke with Marco Group which manufactures the stands for walmart and they said my stand was able to hold up to 2100lbs before it broke and it was only rated for 550lbs.. Send me a PM and I can give you the phone # for the company..

Good point cj, the Wal Mast stands are fiberboard construction which can absorb water. After tank maintenence, just wipe off any water that may be on the stand and its not an issue.

I concur. I have the 55 gal stand from Wal-Mart as well as the tank kit (but I get a discount on it, haha!) It's nice looking, fairly easy to assemble, and is very sturdy. And Good point about wiping it down if you get water on it, that is true.

Good luck with it!

I also use a wally world 55 gallon stand. No problems but as everyone said already put it together well and make sure to wipe off any water that may get on it.
