I'm getting ready to buy a new betta. Previously, I had a veil tail and a crowntail. The veil tail was very friendly and seemed to recognize and like me. He would come over to me often, and sat on the plant on the left side of the tank, near to where I use my laptop. The crowntail usually flared at me when I looked in at him. He didn't like it when I looked in too much.

Are veil tails friendlier, and crowntails more aloof? Or is it impossible to predict?

Yeah. I have several. Some are more active and friendly, some hide...some are nice, some flare at everything.

I agree, it seems that every betta has a different personality. All of mine seemed quite similar though - friendly (except towards other fish) and happy to see me at feeding time. They even ate out of my hand.

I have only had vaeil tails and some are down right aggressive and flare all the time. My current guy back peddles when I put the mirror up to him. The only thing he will flare for is my camera. At least I have that. :)

Thanks for the replies, everyone. I guess I'll just have to observe them a bit and see if I can tell what their personality is in that little cup! PlatyLady, what did you feed your bettas that they ate out of your hand? I hope I get a friendly one. I loved my crowntail, but I think half the time he hid behind the plants and glared at me!! Although when I had them both together briefly in the divided tank, the crowntail sensed that the veil tail was getting my attention by coming up to the front of the tank, so the crowntail started to get a little friendlier!

Just betta bites, either stuck on my finger, or out of the palm of my hand. I was nervous at first, but they never flared or darted at me. I might have jumped and knocked the tank over if they did.

My guy will jump out of the water a little bit when I hold onto his food.

One time my betta (the veil tail) nipped my fingernail when I was feeding him! It startled me! The crowntail liked to jump out of the water for his food. I miss those guys...

The sponge filter that I ordered came today! So my tank is all ready to set up. I think I will look at the lfs tomorrow for a betta! I'm still waiting for the Bio-Spira from Bernie, but if I buy a betta tomorrow, I plan to put it in the critter keeper for 5 days with some medicine, either Clout or BettaMax.
