Was in a lfs today, and they had blue rams in one of their tanks. And I mean BLUE, not like the germans I'm used to which are yellowish near the front and go to blue about 1/4 towards the back, and while there were small, it was tough to determine if they were germans or bolivians. These guys were blue all over and I suspect they may be dyed. Before I go and b*tch about it, do rams come in an all blue color morph? I can't seem to find any pics that match.

Would Rams even survive that? I'd have to think they'd lose 20 for every one they kept alive.

I know...rams are pretty sensitive; I wouldn't expect em to survive it too well. But there are about 7 in the tank, and they aren't any more expensive then the regular ones. Is why I want to be sure before I open up a can of whoop a$$ *grin* I mean, maybe there is a new ram color morph and I just don't know about it. There are gold rams, which are yellow color morphs of the germans...maybe these are new ones?

I have heard of various dyed Cichlids, but none were Rams. Hopefully the fish market does not keep going in this direction if the Rams are dyed :(

My lfs has little blue cichlids (like crayola blue) and little yellow ones with some rams couple weeks back.. They are like a mixed bag of youg fish 1-2 inches. Very cute.
He doesn't carry any painted fish that I recognize, so I doubt these are. Least not to his knowledge. I didn't think it would be cost effective to color in fish that retail over a couple bucks.

Lately there have been a number of cichlids that have been dyed. The ones that immediately come to mind are the 'Jellybean Blood Parrots" and the "Blueberry Oscars". Wouldn't surprise me at all if some half-witted, money-grubbing slimeball decided that Rams aren't colorful enough and dyed them too!!

The rams I saw were completely blue. If you look at both pics you'll see they have yellow areas on the chest (even the krib pic; its more in the blue range photograph color wise, but you can still see that lighter area over the chest). If I go back soon, I'll try to remember to bring the camera.

Ally, do you know the people at that lfs? Do you think they would tell you the truth if they know whether the fish were dyed or not?

I'm becoming more of a fan of Rams these days, it would be cool if there were a really blue one! (not dyed, of course)

Perhaps they aren't dyed but were forced to have grown in a soup of hormones to unnaturally bring out more color?

Heh, I don't think they'd know. This is the same lfs that didn't know dwarf corys existed. I may give em a buzz anyway tho. I am hoping they aren't; they'd be a lovely addition to my crew ;)

As for forced growth, not sure if that would cause the color to be so different.

I was reading on somebody's website (may have been an online retailer of cichlids) that lately they have been raising rams with many artificial hormones to bring out more vibrant colors in younger specimens.

So I stopped back at the lfs to pick up some OmegaOne (only place here that carries it), some diatom filter stuff and to look at them again.

I am sure they're dyed. They're Bolivian Rams; I could see the red trim on the ends of the fins, and Bolivians just DON'T come in that color morph. They are blue from the tip of the nose to the beginning of the fins. I asked one of the kids who work there if they were, and his reply? "Probably."

*sigh*

My lfs has some more of those blue rams.... and some yellow ones..they look like faded tangs. ^-^. They are turning my head! Some you can see the stripe pattern through. And they are dwarf cichlids.

He said he doesn't think they are injected. Not as far as he knows. He knows that some suppliers use pheremones to brighten colors but the fish done that way usually become their real color at the end of his QT. He thinks they are a hybrid of some sort.

That's horrible, Alli! Bolivian rams are beautiful on their own. They don't need dyed color!

Poor little fish... :(
