Hey Guys,

What's the brightest-colored--non-African-Cichlid--FW fish you've come accross? Obvious candidates are Neon Blue gouramis, neon tetras, perhaps bettas. Any others?
(I do have an ulterior motive... I'm getting new fish soon :))

What bout killiefish? Or the rainbows as you mentioned in the other post? Or rams? Paradise fish are also real pretty; look sorta like dwarf gouramis with long fins. Same size and similar territorial behaviors too. Or peacock gobies? Also nice looking fish; from Australia I think. Small but with nice colors (see here: http://www.petfish.net/tater.htm ). I think the killies are gudgeons as well...

I think that you have to look at the killiefish when it comes to colours, killies are egg laying toothcarps or if you want technical family name Aplocheilidae there are close family members as well like Panchax and lampeyes. The lampeyes are Poeciliidae but they are related to the killie.

I just got some Badis, badis, aslo refered to as Chameleon fish. They are pretty colorful and tend to change color often depending on their moods. Also take look at Brazilian Fresh water puffers, they look like small waterlogged bumblebees. As well as their bright yellow and black coloring they are a very animated fish, they have great personalities.

Great answers. What I was hoping for! I have considered the blue rams and the Brazilian FW puffers (very cool fish, and remarkably peaceful... in comparison to other puffers, that is). Blue rams have such short lifespans, though! And I'm still worried to add any species of puffer to my community tank. Anybody ever kept them in a community tank?????

Yeah, I'm leaning towards killifish--they're really really cool. And I have some American Flag Fish in the tank (pupfish, closely related to the killies, same fin configuration, from the Everglades). The Panchax are spectacular, and the gudgeons are amazing. Never seen those before, and LFSs really don't like to stock killies!

I've also seen the paradise fish--LFS has one in stock right now. Very cool, also.

Thanks for the ideas. Of course, I welcome any others, also!
