Hello. This species of Tetra should be at the top of your list of hardy egg layers. Big and beautiful, they'll thrive in a large, species only tank. I keep about 40 or so in a couple of 50 plus gallon tanks. I stress species only, because they're fin nippers and food hogs. They'll be a challenge to breed as there's not a place remote or hidden enough that will protect the eggs from being eaten. A few typically survive though. No small tanks for these fish. A minimum of 40 gallons because you really need several in order for this shoaling fish to thrive. Mine are roughly three years old and get at least half their water removed and replaced every five to seven days.

I'm also a big fan of the Buenos Aires Tetra, and keep 12 of them in a 120 gallon tank.

Tankmates include Giant Danios, Tiger Barbs. Rosy Barbs, Black Ruby Barbs, YoYo, Kubotai, Modesta and Tiger Loaches.

The Buenos Aires Tetras are a bit nippy, but so are all the other tank-mates. Lol.

The Giant Danios keep the Buenos Aires Tetras in check with their nipping and shear athleticism.

The Buenos Aires Tetras are a little tougher than the Tiger Barbs.

I agree, to keep these beautiful boisterous Tetras, no plants, and only keep with appropriate sized rugged tankmates that can bite back.
