calcium reactor?

The friendliest place on the web for anyone with an interest in aquariums or fish keeping!
If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
I am speaking w/ a few local guys here that have experienc building ca reactors and will be trying to put together an article on the process. From what I have seen so far, it is a relatively simle process.

If your interested...give me a week and should have much more detailed info.

Just for an idea, under 100.00 for the chamber and the pump. You would still need the Co2 and the ph regulator.

How hard are they to use? I'm assuming it would be much nicer/easier than mixing/dripping kalk all the time. I"m just worried because one of my LFS's had something go wrong and the Co2 filled the tank killing thousands of dollars of corals an fish 8O

I would say that happens less frequently than heaters cooking the tank (when the ca reactor is set up right.) You can also have somewhat of a safeguard against that by putting your return in a high flow area. The reason the Co2 is harmful is because it lowers the o2 levels and the PH plummets. If you have the return focus on a high flow area it will oxygenate the water and keep the ph w/i ideal ranges.

Thanks again Squishy, interested to see the DIY when it's ready :D

I talked to the guy last night. The short version is that as soon as I can get the supply list together, we will start working on it. I may be able to do it as early as the weekend of the 13th...thats what I am expecting anyway.

We will make sure to take step by step pics and write everything down.

I will kick that over to him and see what he says. I know little about building them...which would be why I am asking him to help out.

The same guy has also helped some of my friends build 400watt m/h bulbs for 130.00 including the bulb. Now obviously, a better bulb will run the cost up a little, but still!
