Ok this is getting frustrating. I have a clown trigger and a porcupine puffer in a 72g tank for the next 8-12 months until they need a bigger home but I cannot keep this tank clean. They both tear food apart and despite have close to 2000gph flow food still settles in with the sand. I orderd a ton of those cheap snails on ebay thinking they might survive but the trigger and puffer have been pecking them all day/night so I guess this plan will not work. Anything else I could try? I was thinking of getting some real big hermits but am afraid they could possible grab the fish when they are sleeping. I was also thinking of a large crowie but I think the fish will bite the eyes or whatever else sticks out from the front of the snail. Anybody have any suggestions?

On another note when I was on vacation a 6 weeks back my mom overfed the tank real real bad. When I got home the clown was ver pale but acted normal. I did a few large water changes and spend a long time cleaning up all the leftover food. A week or so later his color began comming back but he still has not regained his full color. All my levels are zero excpet nitrate which is hovering around 50ppm. Is it just due to excess waste and high nitrates?

I'm pretty sure my fish would take chunks out of them, I was thinking of an urchin or 2 before but was told that triggers can rip all the spines out then flip over the urchin and eat it

A bit off topic but eBay hermit crabs? Got a link? My LFS charges 3 bucks per hermit crab!!

Mine were snails, they were actually Ilyanassa obsoleta snails , after reading a ton of post here and on RC they are considered reef safe although not the most sought after snail. But I got 200 shipped for $50 and there were actually close to 300 in the bags so I"m gonna share them with a bunch of people.

Just do a search on ebay but be careful so that you know exactly what you are getting.

I tried big snails and big hermits when I had my dog puffer. He would nip on them but they lived. Mine were not that active but I attribute that to high nitrates since the tank had been up over 7 years with the same CC substrate.

I did sell the tank and the puffer though to prepare for reef tank I now have. I have one snail that is still kicking and he had been in the puffer tank for almost 2 years :)

Bare bottom tank with plenty of waterflow across the bottom ;)

I'm strongly considerint this, I cannot keep my nitrates down. I think I may try the starfire cutting board material so it's not just the bare glass.

I agree, I don't think I'd like looking in the bottom of the tank and seeing the sump, at least until it was covered with coraline, LOL.

I have some of those snails to. I really like them but I hear they need colder water tanks. I found that I could get nassarius for free locally. Anyways I think a large hermit would work, or just go bare bottom.
