Hi everyone,

I hope you all are doing well.

I have added Dennerle Deponit mix to my tank (currently being cycled).

My question is if I can use the substrate as it is, or do I need to add another level of substrate on top of that.

Why I am asking - I want to have a ‘sea-like’ look for the tank and this Dennerle is perfect for that. But it seems as if the tank has hairlike organism in my tank and it is growing on my bonsai at the back and I am afraid that it is because I do not have another level of substrate on top of the Dennerle.

I am planning to keep Dwarf Pea Puffers and Otocinclus in the tank once cycled.

Any advice is welcome!

Thanks!

It's just a dirt based substrate. You can either cap it with another substrate or just leave it. It might get a bit messy when you do water changes if you don't cap it.

Can you get a closer photo of this hairlike growth? I can't really tell if it's a diatoms, which is normal in a new aquarium or something like black beard algae.

Something to be aware of is that dirt based substrates commonly release ammonia into the water. So from your other thread you have been dosing 4ppm and the substrate might be adding more. Try putting some of this substrate in a jug of water and seeing if there is any ammonia after a couple of days.

Hi again Aiken!

Ok, I’ve tried to capture the hair like growth.

I will do what you mentioned above and give some feedback👌🏻
