Just completing assembling the plywood hood for my 120 gal, and I am a bit concerned about the weight of the thing.

It is 61l*18w*9h split in the center with the piano hinge. into 2 61*9*9 pieces. The light fixture is in one half of it.

It contains about 79*36 of 1/2 plywood sheet, the piano hinge and the light fixture. Trying to pick it up, its weight seems quite considerable.

How much stuff can be safely placed on top of a tank?

as long as the weight isn't concentrated on a single point, I think you're fine

I've seen canopies made from solid oak before, very beautiful, very heavy!

having the canopy sit on the sides and the front of the tank will distrabute the load of the entire system over a larger area.
