Hello aquarists,

New to this forum but need some advice about a diy protein skimmer im building. I read a few pages and i have some conflicting info about intake and water outtake. I was told by a guy at my lfs that i need a pump to take water out. However on a few diy pages it looks like i need a pump to bring water in. This would be a counter current skimmer and maybe a venturi if i can get at least one design to work. So my main question is , how many pumps do you really need and which are water/air pumps to make this work for me? Thanks for any info

Welcome to AquariumAdvice.com :)

You only need one pump to push water into the skimmer. It should "free flow" out of the skimmer on it's own. The only time the added pump would be remotely needed is if it was a stand alone set up to and from the tank which would not be that advisable.

Moving to DIY section

Cheers
Steve
