There is no pet store near me, that will take the fish. I do not know how to mail the fish, they are all Freshwater fish. Could I put them in a pound or a lake, would they survive? I tried to sell my fish and no one will buy them. I do not know what to do with the fish. I do not want to put them to sleep, they are all healthy fish. My mom suggested a lake, or a pound near by, would that work? plus if the tank explodes I would have to pay for the damages, along with the landlord really does not want me to have the fish. We have new management now, it is different. I have two 40 gallon tanks, along with at least 100 fish, including the 80 guppies. I also have 1 pleco, and 8 cat fish along, with 2 glow fish, and 10 tetras.

Releasing fish into a natural watercourse or pond is almost certainly illegal, and even if it isn't in your location then it would ecologically be a very bad idea. The fish you have will be carrying pathogens that native fish have no resistance too. The native fish will be carrying pathogens that your tank kept fish have no resistance too. Your fish might outcompete the native fish for food and kill them all off over time, or your tank kept fish might not be adapted to life in a natural environment and have a very short, miserable life. Or they might outbreed native fish completely taking over the environment. Whatever the outcome it's not going to be good, it's probably illegal, will at the least get you a fine if caught and possibly a custodial sentence depending on jurisdiction. Here in the UK the fine would be up to £50000/$66000. If we are talking about releasing illegally kept GM fish like glofish you would go to prison here in the UK. Release of fish into natural waterways is a serious issue.

If its an ornamental pond, with the owners permission, that would be OK, as long as the climate suits your fish.

You might have better luck advertising locally the whole lot. Aquarium, filter, heater, light, aquascape, fish etc, free to a good home, pick up only. People are always looking for used aquariums, and they may accept the fish if it means they get a couple of free aquariums.

Do you have an organisation like our RSPCA who might help? They might not directly take the fish from you, but might be able to direct you to a local fish rescue service.

If you can't keep the fish, can't sell them and can't give them away, then euthanasia is the best option. In fact it's the only option. It's just a matter of how you go about it, and whether your method is humane (clove oil, blunt force trauma) or inhumane.

I can't stress this enough. Don't take your fish and dump them in a pond.

I’m sure somebody would take these fish with the tank. Put it on aquabid(I think that’s what it’s called) or put it on the Facebook marketplace. Put it rather cheap so people will be willing to pay for it. And as aitken said DONT put them in the wild or you will be facing a fine most likely greater than what your landlord would fine you for your tank.

Since the shop won't take them, as already suggested, you can't legally release them and flushing down the toilet will not help the fish or your water system so unless you find a buyer or taker, you will have to euthanize them. As already suggested, try Facebook marketplace, Craig's List, aquabid, local penny savers, online classified ads through the newspapers or see if any local school is willing to take the whole setups either for money or donation. You can put ads in your local supermarkets if they have areas like that inside the stores, car repair places often have cork boards for business cards in their waiting areas or you can also look up any local fish clubs and I'd ask that local shop if you can post an ad in their store for the setups for sale.
On a side note, it's a shame it came to this after all you've been through. :(

Hope this helps.

I will not take to the wild, thanks for all your help. I will put an ad in the local paper. I did try to sell on craigs list for free, but the fish did not sell. I can try again, and also put in the local paper, as well, which I have not done yet. I will do everything I can do, before putting the fish to sleep. I will put the fish come with tank, and is all set up with fake plants, and heaters and so on, for free. Thanks for all your help. I will put an ad in the super market bill board as well. I did try to sell on facebook, but nobody has gotten back to me, yet. I am not asking for any money. I just want the fish to go to a good home.

I’m very surprised no one has accepted it for free. Another option is to go onto other forums(I’m sure someone on aquarium co op will take it) and see if any else wants it on there. Sorry for suggesting other forums guys just want the best for the fish.

I could always buy a 40 gallon clear tote, then I do not have to worry about tank exploding, I thought that was a great idea I thought of, then i could keep my fish. I looked to see if they had 50 gallon clear tote, amazon and ebay did not have any, that I could find. I have a 40 gallon tall right now, but I wanted to try to find something a little bit bigger, for my pleco. Where can I find a 50-to 60 gallon clear tote? I found a 40 gallon clear tote, though.

If you want something that has zero chance of failing, an acrylic aquarium rather than a glass aquarium will be better than a tote. Much more robust than a tote box, much lighter than a glass aquarium, acrylic aquariums are a molded piece of plastic with no seams to fail. A bit pricey though. Here is an online store.

If you really wanted a tote box, look at a builders merchant or garden supply rather than a hardware store. A forklift mortar tub is cost effective, or a large plastic water container. If you want something aquarium specific, Google "fish holding tank" and you can get tubs that breeders use to hold fish.

I'd check with your landlord though. They don't normally care what the aquarium is, glass, acrylic or a tote box. They normally just don't want a high volume of water in their premises.

I checked out the store, is way too expensive for me. I found this tank on ebay, Is this a full tank set up? I can order 55 gallons. Is Acrylic Tank. Acylic tank if the tank is moved to another location, would I have to worry about it breaking once I got it home?

Looking at it, does not seem to come with the tank. I will keep a look out, until I find a tank I can afford.

I'd check again with your landlord because it's the weight on the floor that most landlords object to so switching to a tote or acrylic does not solve that problem. I'll add that with Plecos, they can chew on the plastic or acrylic so I definitely would not keep the pleco if you go that route. I made that mistake in my fiberglass vats and the damned fish chewed the crap out of it.

I will try to sell the pelco then, but keep the other fish. I hope someone will buy him. The other fish I will put in a tote, that is all I can afford right now. The landlord is ok with it, but I had to sign a paper that if there is any water damage I am respon for it. I am scared, what if my glass tank explodes, then what do i do? I would feel much better with plastic or arcylic ..The tanks I have now do not have leeks I keep checking because I want to make sure my tank does not explode.

This is what google said. Do you agree?
No, a pleco would likely not chew on a tote. While plecos are known for their "algae-eating" abilities, they are also known to scavenge for food and may nibble on various objects in their environment. However, a tote is not a natural food source and is unlikely to be palatable or digestible for a pleco. In addition, plecos typically have strong, armored bodies, which make them unlikely to be able to damage the material of a tote with their mouths.

All I can say is neither is fiberglass but they chewed into it because, most likely, there was biofilm on it. They don't stop just because it doesn't taste good. They have rasping teeth and they use them.
It's your money. ;)

It looks like I am going to have to sell my pleco. Also I only have a 40 gallon tank, which is not big enough. I was going to get a 50 gallon clear tote, which I will for my other fish, but the pleco is going to have to find a good home. I will do all I can to sell him to a good home. Wish me luck cause i am going to need it.

Sounds like a plan. ;) (y)

I called Allstate and insurance company and I am now insured if my tank breaks, so I do not have to get rid of my fish. They told me as long as it is an accident then they cover me. I still am going to try and sell my pleco though and get a smaller pleco. The pleco I have right now is getting big. I want to find a good home for him, a bigger home. I should of listened and got a smaller pleco to begin with.

You want to look for bristlenose plecos. There are now a number of color forms of them available but they all will stay smaller ( compared to your Hypostomus pleco) and max out at only 6" +/-.

I did have a bristlenose pleco, but when I drained out my tank, so they could do the floors, is when he went missing. I do not know where he went. I still have not found him. He is no longer in the tank, not sure where he went to. I looked in the hose but did not see him there. Anyways I am not going to buy another bristlenose pleco, until my other pleco sells.

They can be in your decorations, plants or anything hollow. They are mostly night feeders so he may be coming out when you are in the other room catching ZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz ;)
