Is this ick?

zebra_danio.jpg

Picture is a little fuzzy.

you'd need a clearer picture. If it looks like white dots on its body i suggest it is. there are medications out there for it and it is best you use them otherwise your tank could get badly infected. i believe it is a parasite and i think it occurs when the eggs are laid in the fish and when they hatch under the skin. Another way to determine it is if the fish rubs up against things and what not scratching at its skin etc.

your best bet is to get someone to look at the fish or better still get a clearer photo so we can really look at it. best bet before treating it is to ensure that it is ich otherwise placing medication in the tank could kill of your bacteria and that would be bad.

It's in a QT tank, not rubbing up against anything, just a "white tip" on his top fin. He is the biggest zebra danio I have could it be just coloration? I am treating for ick anyway.

Well, some fish do have small tips or spots on their fins. Make sure to look closely, and see if the white dots (ich parasites) are elsewhere on the fish. If so, it's probably ich. But, the good news is that if the spots are that invisible, you don't have a bad case of the parasite. Your fish should be fine if you follow the advice.

Nota Bene: ich medicined kills the free-swimming, just-hatched, (pretty much invisible) parasite, not the matured, white-spot, parasite you see on a fish. Make sure to do the appropriate water changes to get rid of it. The instructions should guide you to do this correctly.

The only spots I see are on his dorsel? fin. I've tried to take a better picture but he won't pose for me.

"Dorsal" (on top) fin.

Yeah, ZDs don't just stop. They're hyperactive! If you had a manual focus camera you'd probably be able to get off a decent picture, but I'm guessing by the perfect focus on the glass that you have a standard camera, no?

Well, the medication may be unnecessary, but better safe than sorry, I suppose.

Finally got a good look. It's not ick, it's the white tip of his fin. Thanks for the help.
