I keep a very busy tank myself.
My first suggestion is to use a 'stress' innoculation on a regular basis e.g. 'stress zyme'. Don't use too much, however, as it will bacteria bloom your tank.
Second, create hiding places for your fish. I have 4 plants, 2 tunnels, and a large cave with 2 levels for the fish to hide in. This seems to work quite well.
Third, be cautious at water change times. Generally, putting warmer water back into the tank and hyper-airating the tank will help for a successful change. Mine are weekly.
I'm getting carried away here but fourth, pick hardy fish and fish with scales as they will resist any 'ick' infestation.
Fifth, I definitely recommend a bio-filter of some sort. I'm running 2 undergravel filters and a bio-wheel equiped external filter and these keep the ammonia levels down very low. Granted, so are the nitrite levels but this keeps the aquarium healthy.
Lastly, it would be prudent to purchase non-aggressive fish. All of the fish in my tank seem to enjoy each others company... for the most part.
Once you get the hang of it, this aquarium stuff is great! Best wishes!
