Hello all I was wondering if any of you had any experisnce breeding bettas?

I was considering them to be my next type of fish to breed (from guppies to bettas :) need a little more challenge :p )

What are the requirements to breed bettas? I read on a website someone could not get them to breed without a HUGE 500G pond...I thought that seemed a little ridicoulous.

What would be required to breed them? Also if do go through with this...would it be ok to get them from a pet store? *MUST FREE BETTAS FROM LITTLE CUP *cries* so unfair*

TIA !

Freeing Bettas from a little cup is good, but once you breed them, what would you expect to do with them? Since the males can not be kept in tanks together, you would likely end up with too many male Bettas, and then those Bettas end up in lettle cups again :(

Check this link for breeding information, no 500g pond required:

Well...My friends would love some they told me. Its easier to keep bettas than it is guppies :) . I don't feel bad for bettas in a fish bowl as long as proper cleaning is done a lot to the fish bowl. I had a betta in a bowl live for 5 years at least...intil it decided to jump into the sink...I was so sad.

One thing to keep in mind when breeding bettas... you will quickly have a hundred little bowls taking over a room of your house. 8O What an experience! It also takes a lot of time - consider having to keep all those little bowls clean. (and I feel cleaning two of my tanks in one day is a big job!)

Plus, you have to get the mating timing just right, or you'll have a beat-up (or dead!) mommy fish.

Well, you can keep a bunch of Guppies in one tank with little issue. It makes water changes and feeding and everything much easier :)

I think you miss understood me. Its easier to care for ONE betta in ONE container than it is guppies. I was talking about giving away bettas. I also plan to NOT breed store bought guppies...only top of the line. After doing a lot of reading...the project is delayed intil summer most liekly...or around a school break time.

500gal pond!? Well maybe if you were raising 1foot bettas  lol

You could get get them from a petstore, but the offspring would be harder to sell then if you had quality bettas.

I have a page on breeding on my site, you can check it out at:

FYI, breedings the easy part, raising the fry is where it gets hard.

I just visited your webpage, bettacove. You have some really beautiful bettas! But I'm almost more impressed at your fish-picture-taking abilities. Someday I'll get there!

Thanks, tho I gotta say it took me a while to figure out the picture taking stuff. You should see some of my first picks lol
