I use an emperor 400 about 1/4 the way up from the bottom so I can hide the huge strainer and a magnum with the intake about 1/2 way down but I'm thinking of moving it up.
I use a UGF which ensures that water circulates through the tank from top to bottom. This is important for your cat fishes to get fresh supply of water/oxygen.
To create a similar effect with a powered filter, I would, IF possible have your intake/output pipes or whatever in your tank from top to bottom and on opposite sites of the tank. Basically you want to shift ALL the water in your tank through what ever filter you use, and not just at the rear top right back of the tank.
Theoretically your intake/output wants to be as diagonally opposite as possible
I agree with the input and out put being opposite as possible. The emperor wont allow that being fixed. But I do seperate the magnum and the output shoot upward and towards the far side whereas the intake is in the corner. I would put them in each corner but the emperor is on that side.
I run a penguin 125 on my 20 gallon tank and the inlet sits right in the middle of the tank. I would like to find a way to move it to the bottom of the tank because I have read somewhere that that is supposed to be the best place for the inlet to be so that you have full tank filtration. I cannot find any extention tubes for that model of HOB, so if anyone has any ideas on DIY for this problem, I would love to hear them.
The problem I have found with the inlet so far up is that if the flake food hits the current and is drawn toward the outlet of the filter, it pushes the flakes right down into the intake and if the fish don't eat the food right away, that it gets sucked right into the filter and clogs the filter pad. :x
