:) I have a 58 gal tank (36x18x18). I want to support a moderate level of plants. Nothing heavy duty. I don't really want to get into c02 systems.

I had a standard 30 watt single tube aqua glow light.

I just upgraded to a ho compact flo 110 watt with 2 GE 9325 kelvin lamps.
Have I overdone it? Will I have a big algae problem?

Right now I have no plants and am ready to get started. Any ideas on some plants to start with?

110 watts on a 58 galllon, right around 2 wpg. not bad, you can grow a fair assortment of plants. Crypts, Anacharis, some vals and sag varieties, hornwort and other bunch plants do fine in my low-light tank. (anything over 3wpg is considered higher light)

Algae, tough call. really hard to say if you will have a problem, as it varies so much from tank to tank. However most folks, regardless of lighting, have at least somewhat of an algae problem at the beginning, I sure did! Once my tanks reached their own balance of plant to fish load, most algae goes away.

Also, you haven't mentioned substrate, what kind of gravel do you have?

I am just using plain gravel now. What can I add that will not pollute the tank and distress the fish?
