long distance moving????????????

I will be moving about 15 hours away in a few months, what do I do? do I sell my fish and start over, or can I bring them with me? Is there any services out there that courier fish??

A 15 hour move is pretty long but maybe this information will get you started.

on the thread targaboy mentioned, i gave my experience of moving a reef tank. i would say it would be much easier to move a fresh/brakish water tank. good luck.

I agree it would be easier moving a FW tank, but 15 hours is a long haul. Can you tell us more about the tank and the fish in it? You very well might be better off selling the fish and moving everything else.

I have all sorts of fish in my 33 gallon freshwater tank. neon tetras, bala shark, danios, frogs, kribs, severums, glass fish, glass catfish, rams, gouramis, paradise fish, fancy's, weather loaches, giant thai loaches, shrimp clown loaches, platys, rasboras, algae eaters, pleco, beta, rummy nosed tetras. I also have all live plants. Strangely enough, all these fish live together with no problems, no fin nipping, no fighting. They all have their own space and they all swim together. The only ones that have a problem are the 2 paradise fish, they hate each other.
The 15 gallon tank has 2 spotted puffers, 2 dwarf puffers, 4 mollies, 1 algae eater, snails(feeders), ghost shrimp(feeders). This tank also has many live plants. The puffers are doing great and are really playfull with one another. As long as you keep them fed regularily, they leave the other fish alone.

I have never moved fish over such a distance, but I think the larger the fish the better chance of surviving such a move (they would be less likely to get too stressed). Also the betta and gouramis can breath atmospheric air and so will be less effected by the lack of replenishment of oxygen in the water.

Fish can live without food for that period of time and so if you don't feed them they will produce less waste and not pollute the smaller water containers too much.

15 hrs., i take it this is by land? Car or truck?

I live in Hermosillo Mexico and all of the aquariums here get their fish flown in from the US and South America. You might consider flying them over.
Have a talk with a shipper like UPS or American Express, they can provide you with the type of packaging required, then have someone send them over to you same day delivery so you can pick them up yourself and keep the stress to as little as possible. I am guessing about a 4 to 6 hour flight.

Also speak with your local aquarium shop, and ask them for advise on shipping, how to cope with stress and so forth.

This is pretty much what i would do and since you have 2 months that gives you time to prepare.
