Mollies retain the sperm from the first time they are impegnated. Without another encounter with a male, they can continue fertilizing their new eggs and continually give birth their whole life.
My guess is that she is gravid, rather than stuffed with food, but of course it seems that in the presence of a male, female mollies never stop being gravid! I have one that has been bulging for a couple of weeks now, so I am expecting her to release her babies any old time. Considering the 12 fry in the tank now from another female, I have mixed feelings.... 8O
I would like to have more gold dust mollies. I have had 3 die off in the past few weeks for no reason that I can find. I just want to make sure to keep an eye on her so that I can put her by herself when she starts to have them. I had one molly not sure what kind it was maybe a silver molly? that was pregnant and she looked like a porkypine with her scales all sticking out. I caught her just as she starting to have babys and put her in the hatchery she had 17 babies and wasnt done when she died...she was still full of babies. Makes me wonder how many she would have really had! But I lost all of those babies too I dont want to loose these.
I mean this fish was fat! Had just gotten her the day before she died. She looked prickly!lol I have never seen anything like it before! I dont know but when I took her back to the pet store to get her replaced they were amazed! I dont know if there was anything else wrong with her or not but the pet store said it was probably from the pregnancy and she looked kind of bloody looking around where the babies had come out. But she was huge!!!! You know how big she had to be to have had 17 and still had some in her!
