Need a Quiet Pump

Alright, we currently have a Rio 2800SS that is currently running the return from the over flow. I thought it was a bit loud but after putting the sand/aragonite in last night, it has gotten crazy loud.

I wanted to replace this anyway but it will be sooner than later now.

Can someone recommend a quiet, submersible pump for a 75 Gal FOWLR tank?

I have looked at the Quiet One 3000 and this looks pretty good. I also saw a ViaAqua 3600 that has quiet in the description.

The tank is in the kitchen right now so something quiet is a must. After my basement is finished the tank will be moved but that will be a while.

So this pump is in the sump? Sounds like you got sand in the impeller and is probably causing a lot of grinding and scratching noises. Did you put sand in the sump?

I have a Mag drive pump and love it. Almost no sound. But I will point out that no matter what pump you get, if you are getting sound in the impeller it is going to be loud and eventually lead to the impeller assembly being worn down.

The pump is in the sump part of wet/dry under the tank. I figured it got some sand in it but it was too loud before. I had the water in the tank and I added the substrate last night. I left the pump running so a little sand got in the wet/dry filter under the bioballs.

We had considered the Mag 7 as well but I was not sure if it was considered a quiet pump. The RIO that we are running is pretty strong if not too strong. It made some nice sand dunes last night. Of course the sand is a bit loose yet.

I figured having 2 big pumps would be a good idea so I want to get a quieter pump and have the rio as back up.

Mag pumps are stronger IMO thatn the RIO's. Sounds like you should take the RIO out for a good cleaning. You should be able to take the impeller out and give everything a good rinse and cleaning.

I think the mags are somewhat quite. I mean most pumps are gonna have some kind of hum to them.

We got a "Quiet One Pump" and it's just that, Quiet, our tank sits in our bedroom, no noise, the only noise we hear are the fans when the lights come on in the morning. We got ours from Doctor Fosters Smith http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_Display.cfm?siteid=6&pCatId=9849

We are happy with it, I guess I should post a review on it, good price and great pump.

Thanks for all the info. I went to LFS today and talked with the person there. She thought that I should check the impeller too. She said as long as the pump is submersed and not vibrating something, it should be quiet.

They did sell MAG pumps and she highly recommended them but they were smaller than what I have and twice the price. She said they can not compete with the internet. They did have some nice base rock though ... 1.69/lb is OK I guess.

I will probably pick up a Quiet One pump when I order from Drs Fosters and Smith. They sell a few things I need.

We actually picked up a mag7 pond pump today. Nice and quiet.

A different LFS sold the 2800SS and said they are supposed to be quiet but they are not

We might keep it for a back up I guess.
