This morning I woke up, fed the fish and did my daily health check. My largest neon tetra has developed a weird spot near its tail fin. Looking in the books, one identified it as neon disease but gave no advice as to what to do!
Ths fish is behaving normally, my levels were all in the normal range, and the other neons are all healthy. Immediately moved him (?) into our hospital tank 1.6 gal. Added approx 1 tablespoon of salt to the tank and salted the main tank as preventative. I am planing on doing a 50% water change in all tanks tonight and re-salting the 29 gal and the hospital tank. The temp in the 29 gal is around 84.
Any other ideas? I was going to buy angels tonight, but now I don't want to introduce any one into this until I am sure the main tank is ok. Unless angels and gourami do well together, then I can QT the angels in the 6 gal until I am sure of health.

From my research in the past and a quick google that turned up the above, it looks like you've done just about all you can. There's apparently no cures for the neon disease (Either it or the fake version) and the best you can do is get them quickly away from the others.

That's about the only page I could find quickly with any amount of decent information.

Thanks for the connection. Some times I wonder if treating any disease other than ick is just futile. The cost of some of the medicines and the low survival rate... sigh :?
I will give this little guy a chance... and do my best.... after all I do have to look myself in the eye when I am at a mirror. Couldn't do that if I didn't give him a chance. He doesn't seem to be suffering, just a little lonely.

Just a FYI, but you don't want to QT fish in an established tank with established fish. The whole point is to keep them isolated and away from your guys till you can be sure they're healthy. It would suck to put them in with the gouramis only to discover they have ich or columnaris.

You may want to grab a cheap 10g and a heater n filter (tank is $10 at Wallymart *grin*). It will make a better QT tank. Its bigger for one, which means less of a chance of water parameter probs as opposed to a 1.6g. Plus, you'll get a better picture of behavior if they have more room.

The 1.6 gal is all I can use. Hubby won't let me set up another tank! The first tetra is still acting normally and eating. Now I spotted another tetra with fading of color on its tail. I tried to hunt him down... but Murphy's law took effect and he moves way too fast. I tried to wait him out and sneak up on him, but he seems smarter than the average bear.
Did the 50% water changes and added the salt to both tanks. So far no one seems to be suffering, but I really wish I could get the second one out of the big tank!
