Hi and welcome to the forum. :flowers:
African cichlids are a very pretty group of fish but you have to be careful with them as they can be very territorial. Unlike with most fish, they need to be crowded if you want to have many to help reduce fighting.
How big is your tank?

I'm currently have a 10 gallon and a 2.5 gal for a hospital tank/ snail tank.(as the hornwart i bought, that has pretty much been dead since it came in the mail, carried eggs that hatched last week.) I know it's small for a cichlid so, I'm looking for something bigger that way I can get a tank mate for my current fish. When she first got to the 10 gal she swam about freely often, but now is constantly standing gaurd in her caves entrance ever since I started using a fishnet to skim the water when doing tank maintenance. She's very territorial, but I'm trying to figure how I went from her coming tonthe glass excited to see me and being able to pet her from time to time to her not wanting to come eat when the lights are on or someone is in the vicinity of her tank.

It's because either there is a water issue or she's not happy in such a small tank or from you scaring her. Here's the deal with Africans: you can not get her just one tankmate unless it's a male of her specie and definitely in a much larger tank. ( getting a second female is iffy that they will get along together. ) You would need to get A LOT of tankmates with very few places for any one fish to claim as home against the other fish. Africans are not your typical cichlid fish. Here's a good video on what to expect with Africans:
I will also add that I am not endorsing his site or any of his materials he's selling but his information is spot on. (y) ( Take notice that his big tank does not have caves but has large rocks for the fish to swim around or hide behind but not to take over as a home. )
