I am working on starting a 70 gallon tank. measurements are 36 inches by 24 inches by 18 inches. It is only my second tank which is a bit scary but i am planning on taking it really slow so hopefully it works out. I have a few questions to ask
1. Currently the only lock for pets are some neocaridina shrimp or maybe caridina. What would be some good tankmates?
2. How much filtration would be required for a tank like this
3. I would like to add some sort of snail. What kind of slow breeding options are available that wouldnt take over the tank like a ramshorn would do.
4. Another option for snail could be to try to get a steady population of a pest snail and keep a few assasin snails as well, but I feel like this could be hard for keep a balanced population without too much supplementation.
5. Would any crab species by Viable?
6. I would like to have a school of small fishes, what would be a good option?
7. are there any easy to grow carpeting plants that stay pretty short? ive tried dwarf hairgrass and have never had success keeping it alive.
8. Could I potentially have a plant that is above the water with roots in the water?
9. Best way to have a population of microfauna in the tank?
10. Best way to minimize amount of water changes?
thanks for any help

1. Ottocinclus are the only shrimp safe fish. However cories, most shoaling fish and maybe a honey gouramis would work.
2. Filtration depends on how much you want to stock it, I would go for a filter for a 90 gallon for a 75 gallon, especially if you don’t want to do loads of water changes
3. Not a big snail fan but you could get an apple snail or a mystery snail, but I enjoy my assasin snails.
4. Yep you need lots of snails to have assasins as I learnt as after they ate all the ramshorns they didn’t have much too eat.
5. Don’t know about crabs
6. Shoaling fish is personal choice so come back with ideas of what shoaling fish you like the look of
7. Guppy grass should work.
8. Yes I use Amazon frogbit
9. Don’t know anything about microfauna so I’ll skip that one
10. Best way to minimise water changes is over filtration, lots of plants, lightly stocked.

Thanks for the reply! by shrimp safe, do you mean other fish will eat the shrimp or just the shrimp babies. If its just the babies, I dont mind too much as I kind of want this tank to have its own ecosystem and there should be plenty of plants for some of the babies to hide and reach adulthood.

for snails, I would prefer to have something slowbreeding that will also help with algae and detritus, I was thinking maybe some japanese or chinese trapdoor snails but idk if that would work.

I also dont have a huge budget so I cant spend a ton on food idk if that will affect fish choices at all

For the floating plants I dont want them to overtake the whole top as I still need light to get in, Are there any ways to keep them at bay?

also how tall will guppy grass grow to be?

thanks for the advice

To keep floating plants at bay I guess just get rid of them when you have to many. My guppy grass failed to grow but I would say maybe like 8cm tall, not too sure tho. Ottos are the only fish that won’t eat baby shrimp the other fish I suggested won’t eat adult shrimp and some babies should survive. Foods not very expensive so I would say it shouldn’t impact that but it may impact fish choices a bit more. I’m not expert on snails but maybe a Nerite or mystery snail for algae but other will be able to help more on snails.
