Hey Grant,

I don't know the species but I know it is not eating it's young.
It's a Mouth Brooder.
Mouth brooding is common in many freshwater and marine fishes and is usually done by the male, although in cichlids it is usually the female that broods the eggs. Mouth brooding gives the brooding parent a form of nest mobility that helps both the parent and the nest to avoid predation.
Basically, once hatched the young are easy prey, but hiding in there is pretty safe, IMO.
