If you operate an OASE cannister filter (all sizes) and have experienced the frustration that I used to have restarting the filter after cleaning the pre-filter or cannister you will be thankful you found this post ! I once spent a 1/2 hour pumping the primer with no luck. This method is one the factory manual does not give but becomes a big deal especially if you have an inboard heater and your tank starts to cool off BAD NEWS! you cannot get your filter restarted pumping and pumping does not purge the air inside. After months of frustration I finally solved the problem. THIS WORKS EVERYTIME. After cleaning the pre-filter or cannister and it is put back together leave the pre-filter dry do not add water remember Archimedes law of displacement there should already be water in the docking hole but if you look to the right you will see the water inlet rectangles. Take a measuring cup and pour in about 2 cups or less of tank water and make the water rise to the very bottom of the inlets but not any further till is just touches the bottom edges. Remember what I said about Archimedes law of water displacement? Inserting the dry pre-filter canister will cause the water sitting on the edge of the water inlets to rise displacing the air and rising to the top of the water inlets. Now what you have to do is fill the pre-filter cannister with water. You do this by pumping the primer 5 times. If you did not empty your pre-filter the water would rise beyond the top edge or you could blow your main seal and cause leaks if you closed it. Now just plug it in an voila its working. Tilting the outlet tube a bit lets you see the force of your water flow. Happy fishkeeping!!!

One thing to Remember I you get bad junk coming out when you restart your cannister or any canister filter if you get junk coming out of your filter that "junk" is coming from your hoses mainly time to clean your hoses

I know this post is a little old, but once I saw OASE, I had to chime in as I don't see many posts about OASE. I've owned and used nothing but OASE on my show tanks since I started in the hobby 6 years ago. I currently have a 250 & 350 w/heaters on my 4ft 55g Mbuna tank that I have been running every day since 2019 knock on wood. I have two 850's & two 350's w/heaters on my 8ft 200g Peacock, Common Hap, and Predator Hap tank and I love them. Your post is spot on and over the first month or so I learned to do a similar approach. I too empty the pre-filter and don't refill it, but I also mark the current water level inside the canister filter once I have removed all media baskets (a piece of duct tape does the job for now) :) After cleaning the filter, I just fill the canister back to the level it was when I turned it off. The water left in the hoses fills the pre-filter and water from the tank fills the hoses again. All I do is hit the button on my smart plug app for the filter and it's running like a champ. I haven't touched the primer button since 2019. Great Post and Happy fishkeeping.
