I have had a longhorn cowfish for 2.5-3 months now. During that time he has frequently gotten white spots on his fins. I can tell you rather definitively that they are not ich. They are way too big and way too bright. They are never on his body, and they are typically (but not always) on the very ends of his fins.
Now, previously I've lost a cowfish to this. The white spots are always in the webbing of the fins between the "lines" of the fins (or whatever they're called). This cowfish casualty I lost had the white spots, but they eventually turned into lines running all the way up and down the web of the fin between two "lines" and eventually it cut his fin in half there. He stopped using it, held it up to his body, and eventually checked out.
This has not happened to my current cowfish, however. He seems to shrug them off fairly well. Occassionally I will treat him directly with Kanacyn. I catch him in a bowl (not hard to catch a cowfish), apply the Kanacyn to him directly, get him out of the bowl, and pour it down the sink. It seems to work pretty well.
I was at the LFS today and talking to one of the few guys that I actually trust a bit and he said that this was referred to as "pearling." He said that it's usually no big deal, but sometimes it can be. He said that if the cowfish has shrugged it off this many times already that I should not be concerned with it. What say you about this advice?
