Aquarium Advice Newbie
I have a 10 gallon tank that is about 4 months old. I have 3 guppies, and one molly. As well I have about 15 fry that are about one week old, and three that are 2 months old..I'm not sure if they are still called fry at that point?
Anyways, my question is about my pH GH and KH. I have never had a problem with m pH, it has always been around 7.0 or 7.2. Today I tested it at 7.8 or even a bit higher. I went out and got a pH adjuster, pH stabilizer and a GH/KH test kit.
I got my pH down to about 7.5, but I was not sure how long after adding the drops that I am supposed to wait before it stabilizes to the new pH...does that happen right away??
I tested the GH and got a number that does not make a whole lot of sense to me....160, which tells me that the water is moderately hard...what does that mean? Just that I should watch that the new water I add with water changes should be about 160 as well??
The KH was 60 and it says that anything betwen 20-80 mg/L is normally associated with a low pH..(I thought mine was high at 7.8)...and that is was good for fish that prefer acidic conditions....If my pH was 7.8 (which is was when I did the KH test) that is still neutral but almost Alkaline...not acidic...so that reading doesn't make sense.
So should I be trying to raise my KH? (which the pH stabilizer does right?) or should I be worrying about it at all?
I was also wondering about the numbers themselves...the numbers for KH that I normally see here are like 8?? So why is 60 what I am getting?? The booklet says something about multiplying either the GH or the KH by 0.052 to get the gH..but that doesn't makes sense because the numbers would be totally different....like 8.96 and 3.36????
I think I got everything...I typed this out once, and it got deleted accidently...so hopefully it's all there....I am just a bit confused by the numbers, and don't know what to do?
