Plant quarantine: is it always a necessity?

The friendliest place on the web for anyone with an interest in aquariums or fish keeping!

If i subjected these new plants to medication, i wouldn’t do so in a fish-occupied tank, i’d do it in an unoccupied tank.

I wasn’t aware of ‘tissue cultured’/‘guaranteed pest free’ plants—that’s fantastic—thanks for enlightening me!!!

So what about the 2 plants i got yesterday: stronger peroxide dip? Or set them up in that wee hospital tank w/a dose of prazi-met?

Aside from that, i’ll look into those pest-free plant sources u recommended.

Thanks again✨
You could soak them in plain carbonated water overnight in the dark, rinse and plant the next day. Just make sure they are completely under water while soaking. It will kill snails and any eggs.

😺Looking forward to setting up that bucket!!!

I saw a 2nd fry in the 2.5gal!!! Whatever the outcome, the process is fascinating (& of course, a trifle nerve wracking—from the life/death perspective)—& i’m glad i isolated those eggs!!!

Further re PLANTS, algae growth, & nitrates…
I’d mentioned that the water parameters in Egg’s 5gal were steady—ammonia, nitrite, AND nitrate, consistently ‘0’.

The ‘0’ nitrate never made sense to me, but that status was concomitant w/the cyanobacteria bloom. I tested the 5gal parameters today: amm, nitrite: 0—NITRATE: 10ppm, which makes a helluva lot more sense than ‘0’. Deduction: the cyano was thriving on the nitrates…? (The pH is neutral—& Egg’s a happy camper😊).

Will keep u posted re new fry😬
Algae needs nutrients and light to exist and survive. Nitrate is a nutrient to plants and algae is a plant. You don't need a calculator or test kits to figure out that when you algae of any color, you have those 2 things happening. In the case of the Cyano, even tho it's a bacteria and not an algae, it's photosynthetic like algae so you have the same issue.

Hey Andy (& early New Year’s salutations🥳… Here’s hoping for good things/better everything—planet-wide!!!)…

Just re-read about using h peroxide to rid new aquarium plants of negative elements. Right now the 2 plants r soaking in 1.5ml hp in ~1gal of water (1.5ml/gal was the recommendation).

In an earlier post i’d mentioned that my past use of hp (same low concentration) didn’t impact any hitchhikers; u suggested the concentration wasn’t potent enough—anything i’ve read on hp use suggests that higher doses would be risky (plant health)—so what would u recommend?

(& yeah, plans changed again—i want to add the plants to the sorority’s 10gal. If i order from that ‘tissue culture’ vendor, they’re not shipping until mid-January. [I KNOW ‘patience’ is key])

Make sure the percentage of peroxide is the same between what you are using and what the directions are using. Also, is your peroxide new? If not, it does go flat after being opened so you may not be getting good results because of that. I like my bucket idea better anyway. The snails will eventually get hungry and eat anything off the plants. ;) ;)
Happy early New Year to you too. (y)

I also like your bucket idea! Thing is, there was only ONE visible snail, so not banquet material!!! I’ve mentioned that in previous uses of peroxide, snail life prevailed, so if the singlet survived, i’ll add it to the intended tank.

I had the plants in the solution for 15-20mins, then rinsed & they’re currently soaking in some conditioned water—have been since i posted my last note here. Do u think it’s ok to put them in the target aquarium (the 10gal w/the sorority & assassins)?

(It’s 2026 on your coast—a few hrs to go here… Fingers, claws, & fins crossed for a danged BETTER year✨)

Ha, you caught me checking for new posts just before closing up shop for the night. LOL Yeah, it's 2026 in FL right now and I am being bombarded by neighbors with either rapid fire fireworks or gun fire. I can't tell which and it's too cold to go outside and yell at anyone ( not that yelling at someone doing celebratory gun fire is a smart idea). Either is possible.

If the peroxide hasn't worked in the past and it's not new, I'd either get a new unopened bottle that hasn't expired or take your chances. Look closely under any plant leaves and see if you see any jelly like blobs and if there are any, try to wipe them off. If you miss any, just be prepared to move the stealthy sneeks into the assassin's tank when they appear. (y)
