Hey guys brndfrb and I went shoppin today and he picked up this clam (still in the bag) It was sold as a Crocea but I am almost convinced it's a Maxima. Deep blue, little purple. Any takers?

Need to see the shell, from what I can see in the bag...it's a crocea, croceas scutes will be fairly small having been worn down from boring into the rock. Maximas are also boring clams, but do not bore as far and there scutes are only worn down about halfway up the shell.

Not mine guys, brndfrb (member here) got it. If My lights were up on the Big tank he would have come home with me. Well right after we fought over it in the parking lot, LOL. Be both got some nice things though.

Seriously, it is very unhealthy, not sure why these other guys are trying to shine you on...luckily for you though, I happen to be an expert in clams and can get it back into good health for you, just send it to me. I wouldn't do this for just anyone
It is gaping a bit, but that is a normal stress reaction for the clam, make sure it is stable and has something to attatch to, and it should be fine within a day or two. From that pic, it does look like a maxima, but I would like to see a shot of the shell from the side, to be sure.

Just for the record you clam "experts" Brndnfrb currently has it on the substrate, should he move it up on the rocks? I though if it was a maxima the substrate would be best. Don't let me lead him astray.

I like keeping my clams on the substrate, but maximas and croceas need a hard substrate to secure their byssal fillaments to, I accomplish this by puttin a flat rock under them on the sand 
Maximas and croceas are boring (digging into the rock) clams, so they are more comfortable on a rocky substrate, however all tridacnids are (IMO) best viewed from above.

So RR you were kidding when you said it sucks right? I hope. I know it is gaping so will that go away or is there somethig that i need to do? I am kind of confused on if you really think that it sucks. Well i guess it doesnt matter /c i freaking like it alot. well any input would be great

I think it is awesome, but the sucks comment was to further my larcenous ruse to get you to send me the clam LOL, can you take a pic of the side of it's shell for me? Get the clam to close first, I'm still hoping to ID it for you. The gaping is common for newly aquired clams, it is a stress response, IME, they will stop gaping withina day or two and this usually coincides with attatching themselves to a rock via their byssal filiments. The exeption to this would be gigas, squamosas and all but the smaller (less than 4") derasas, the rely on their weight to keep them in one place. One thing to note about clams that are attatched to rocks via byssal filiments, the filiments are very strong and must be cut (razor blade works well) as close to the rock and far away from the clam as possible. If you jus pull them up, it is quite possible and likely you will rip their byssal gland out of the shell, this will almost certainly kill the clam. The kicker to that is...it usually takes a couple of days for it to die, so if the LFS employee ripped they byssal gland out....it is likely you would never associate it's death to the manner in which it was removed from the tank.

Oh great now i am worried. But i do know that if he doid hurt it when he puled it off we will be going to raise hell. Anyways i will try to get a decent picture of it tonight or tom. Reefnewb if you see this give me a call later tonight i will be home around 10:30. Hopefully he stops gaping soon.
